I thought that this was going to be just another gimmick club like you see on TV but it is easier to get out of bunkers, chipping around greens and even from the fairway. It is staying in my bag for sure.

So far the 58 degree Smart Sole club is o.k., but it will take a while before I am confident with the club. It still easy to 'blade' the club on a full swing or chip. It occurs both from a failure to go low enough to brush the grass below the lie and from a rebound of hitting the ground with the bounce of the club. It takes time to become accustomed to the club. I have used the club for sand explosions and it is suited to a high explosion with short run out, but the sand used at my club is not 'silly slick silicone', but a white fine-grained sand that forms a crust when not freshly raked encouraging the hooded face 'dried egg lie' explosion impact. So far most of my bunker shots have been of the ten to thirty yard carry which, in practice, has not been the forte of this club. However, I suspect I will have the opportunity to play the high short run-out shot or play to a downhill lie as I play more. I do not regret buying the club. It has replaced my Cleveland CG-15 58°, however, I need more time and play with the club before I can say I will buy another as the grooves wear. If so, I will raise my evaluation to a fourth star.Read full review

Smart Sole "S" not the "magic wand" I was expecting for sand play. Nice club, balanced and well made, but tough to find instructions on-line on how to use from a bunker. Failed me on final hole last evening -- unsuccessful to clear the sand. After the round, spent better part of an hour practicing in a sand trap. Had poor luck with recommended square stance/square club set up/hit a couple of inches behind the ball. Better luck with slightly open stance/club face like a normal sand wedge and using a chipping motion. Oh well, I'll keep it and practice but maybe go back to my old ancient 56* sand wedge. Can't compare it to the Callaway Sure Out since I would be in the dog house with the wife if I buy another wedge. If Callaway sends me one for free, then I'll do a detailed hacker's comparison! Lesson learned -- lay up short and avoid the beach.Read full review

Unfortunately, I have not had on course use yet. Practice use in the yard feel quite good, with good control.

For those who struggle with getting out of bunkers, this sand wedge does the job. Hit the sand 2" behind the ball, complete your swing & the ball will pop out every time, no need to open the face. If you ignore those 2 principals however, no club will get you out of a bunker. Makes golf a lot more fun. The larger flange on the sole increases the width between the leading & trailing edge & is the key to this club's ability to successfully execute bunker shots.
