Based on a true story, this mini-series is filled with action, gun fights, suspense, tenderness and romance, making it a great pick for both men and women. As Prentice Ritter (Robert Duvall) and his nephew set out to herd five hundred horses to Wyoming, they encounter and rescue five Chinese girls who have been sold into slavery. This chance meeting sets them up for all kinds of trouble on their journey, including an intense battle at the end when they reach Wyoming. An excellent development of character in this movie creates an intimate feeling towards the characters that will leave you wishing the movie wouldn't end. Because of some language and adult themes, I would not recommend this movie for young children.
"Broken Trail" debuted in 2006 as a 184 minute TV mini-series, nominated for 3 Golden Globes, with another 15 wins and 24 nominations. Starring Robert Duval and Thomas Haden Church, the film follows Duval (Print Ritter) and Church (Tom Harte - Duval's estranged nephew) on an epic journey as they drive a herd of horses west to Wyoming. Along the way, Ritter and Harte encounter a group of Chinese women being forcibly transported, as prostitutes, to a mining town. It is at this juncture where Ritter and Harte encounter their own humanity, and that's essentially what this film is about: respecting diversity and breaking through the barriers of discrimination that existed in the late 1800's in the American west. "Broken Trail" is a top-notch Western, masterfully directed by Walter Hill, with gorgeous cinematography and unforgettable characters.Read full review
An authentic, captivating, and carefully scripted movie. Not just another "western" but engaging characters and extremely well done, in my opinion. I am no critic, but I identified with the cast and the dialogue, everything...it was a great movie.
