Good and well-written book about origins of Freemasonry. Author takes a few leaps of faith, like anyone writing about this subject, but he explains his logic well. Non-masons would miss some of what is in this book, but any mason will recognize important parts of the book.

Written by a non-Mason. The author set out to research & write about the English Peasants Revolt of 1381 and found the far more interesting story at the root of the revolt. The work is an easy, compelling and entertaining read. It is essential reading for Freemasons who wish to really understand the true origins of the craft.

Robinson, John J. Born in Blood. Lanham: M. Evans, 1989. Robinson begins his book by looking back to the 14th century Peasant’s Revolt of England. He originally began his research to investigate aspects of the Peasant’s Revolt of 1381 and never intended the book to take on the form that it did. Robinson concentrated his research on the organization behind the revolt and the attacks made against the Knights Hospitaller. In his research, Robinson was able to make startling connections to the key leaders of the revolt and to modern day Freemasonry (which was not revealed publicly until the 18th century). Also made is the connection between the Knights Templar and the organization behind the Peasant’s Revolt who would later become the order of Free and Accepted Masons. The religious aspects of Masonry, rituals and initiation rites of the modern Free and Accepted Masons are explained and attributed to those of the Templar order. The author declares in his book, “there can be no other explanation for a secret society in Britain…over four hundred years of total secrecy” (266). James J. Robinson was a non-Mason at the time he wrote Born in Blood but later became one shortly before his death. He spoke and lectured before both Masons and non-Masons alike. He was an historical researcher and writer who had a particular interest in the history of Medieval Britain and the Crusades.Read full review
