Good quality optics in this old Bausch & Lomb microscope. Needed some adjustment and alignment but now works great. This is a good unit for working on tiny surface mount electronic components. The microscope has no built-in light, so you will need to add an external light. The unit shown here has an added fiber optic ring light. The feed end of the fiber optic needs a separate light source. An alternative is to use LED ring lights.

The Bausch & Lomb StereoZoom is a true American classic. It was the first stereo microscope to use zoom lenses, and it remains arguably the finest. They are one of the most durable microscopes ever made, and can usually be completely restored to complete function. Unfortunately, as with most used items, condition is everything. The grease inevitably deteriorates over time coming eventually to resemble concrete. Most used StereoZoom microscopes currently on the market need to be taken apart and regreased. Failure to do so can cause the focus and zoom knobs not to move properly. If they are forced to move anyway, it can lead to alignment problems or scoring of the zoom shaft. It is also a virtual guarantee that if a scope is dropped it will need realignment. Realignment is generally possible, but the process is highly complicated, and is not a job recommended for most amateurs. Also, the castings are brittle and subject to breakage in the event of a collision with the floor. Repair of a broken standpart is a near impossibility. There are rubber seals at the base of the eyepiece tubes, and like the grease, they deteriorate with time and need to be replaced. They are important for keeping the interior optics free of dust, but, unfortunately, replacements from the manufacturer have recently become unavailable. In summary, it's a great scope at a modest price, but finding one in good condition can sometimes be challenging.Read full review

This is a great little scope to have when you need some extra magnification for small things. I use this all the time when I can't see good enough with a loupe or need both hands for the task. It's small enough and light enough to move around if needed.

Item was originally purchased for parts specifically the back plane but after receiving it and checking it out, the zoom of the head worked better than the one I have, so it is being used instead (definitely a big plus). So I feel I have gotten better than what was expected.

The StereoZoom 4 is a very nice microscope, if you can find one in good condition for a good price. The magnification range of this model is perfect for microsoldering.
