Really good story, good acting, and amazing special effects. I think this movie made more Americans look seriously at what firemen and fire departments actually do from day to day, often for the very first time. De Niro always really becomes whoever and whatever he is playing. Kurt Russell is always a strong physical and character presence, and Donald Sutherland is really great in his cameo role as the imprisoned pyromaniac. This movie was made some years ago now, butt still holds up very well. Exciting, entertaining and really educational at the same time. The sex scene (two on a fire truck) was funny, sexually titillating, but very well integrated in the total story without being unnecessarily graphic or heavy-handed. Made in 1998, this movie still gets high marks from me today. Another solid film from Ron Howard. (One of a number!)Read full review

This is a great story. It keeps you guessing who is starting the fires. I really enjoyed "Ronald", his part is played well especially the facial expressions. I saw this movie years ago and decided I would like to own it.

directed by Ron Howard. The story moves along well. Donald Sutherland is excellent as an old arsonist.

Brian McCaffrey's father's a fireman and he was there, as a child, when his father died. When he grew he tried to be a fireman but quit and left town and for a few years tried other jobs. He would eventually return and try to be fireman again. However, he finds himself working under his brother Stephen whom he doesn't exactly have a good relationship with. When Brian gets his picture in the paper and is lauded as a hero when in fact it was a mistake, a politician offers him a job working under the department's arson investigator, Donald Rimgale. It seems that Ringale is working some unusual fires wherein someone is killed. Brian initially refuses but when he has too many confrontations with Stephen, he takes the job. And he gets a lesson on what it means to be a fireman. Ron Howard did a wonderful job of bringing some of the real-life problems that firefighters face everyday in Backdraft. Very realistic, well directed, excellent movie.Read full review
