Decent Book

Needed the book for a third year engineering math class in university. Not sure how it compares to other math books of similar content, but the examples are general and most of the time not very helpful. There is absolutely no color in this book (completely monochromatic) so studying can be very VERY dry, as opposed to the usual: very dry. Overall, content is organized, but if there is a suitable replacement, find it.

Great Book, Used it for my class

I used it for my class, and found it very helpful. Content is lucid and very practical. Very helpful for mechanical engineers, both for refreshing the subject, and practice. If you go to Prof.Haberman's website you could download matlab code for the plots in the book. This was an added advantage for a matlab novice like me.

Great

This book was required for my PDE class. I found it very clear and helpful. The examples at the end of each section helped clarify ideas as well as develop new ones that would be used later in the book. Some of the examples emphasize working out ideas, and he gives step-by-step guidance so you're not at a complete loss while at the same time you know the concept better because you worked it out.

Haberman does a lousy job

To be quite honest...this book is not the one you want. Normally I'm very excited to have a math text that relies on applied techniques using physics to explain the importance of the mathematics, but this is a bad job. Haberman ends up confusing the pure math students due to their lack of physics experience, and confuses the applied math students, because of the lousy job he does using physics as a way to explain PDEs. Find another text!
