Except for the weight, there is nothing bad about the lens. I have handle-held the lens and taken excellent photos of butterflies and insects. Adding a TC-14 teleconverter gives you 850mm of reach with no measurable loss of resolution. You capture magnified details in high resolution. You need to dial down to F/5.6 or F/8.0 to get a couple of inches more of depth of field. The bokeh is beautiful. As to the 13 or so pound of lens weight, all I can say is this: Once you capture some details far away, you will become so inspired that you will learn to deal with the weight. I use a BlackRapid sling: When standing still, I let the sling bear the weight to rest my arms. When I shoot, the handle is underneath. I grasp the handle firmly and lift the lens to the shooting position. I anchor the camera to my face and lock my elbows into my chest. Making a triangle. I can hold the lens and take pictures for about 30 seconds. You get tired but will force yourself to continue shooting because of the spectacular results obtained. If you can shoot at or more than 1/1250, you will have no noticeable camera shake. I write all of this sincerity. I am 75 years old. If I can do it, so can you. Read full review

The overhaul seems to have put this into original condition. And at a fraction of what the manufacturer would charge for a reconditioned lens. Keys to the case were even attached! I would've liked to have the carrying strap included but that's not a big deal. The lens is heavy but that has to be expected. Attached is a photo of the hook for the hay bale pulley at my hay barn. This was taken hand held, through a window pane at 50 meters. The vibration reduction is amazing.

It is the best lens for photographing birds. This version is a little heavier than the newer version but it is just fine since I use it on a tripod anyways.

I purchased this lens to complement a Sigma 800mm 5.6 DG. It is much faster and lighter, and even with a 1.4 teleconverter the images are much sharper than these from the Sigma 800, which goes soft at 5.6. This Nikon lens very sharp at any f stop. Big glass so certainly recommend getting a Lenscoat, as well as a sturdy tripod with a Gimbal head for best results.

The Nikon 600mm F4 telephoto lens is probably the Cadillac of telephoto lenses. Standing at over seventeen inches in length (25 inches with both lens hoods attached), and costing anywhere from $6,000.00 to $9,000.00, this lens is not for your average shutterbug. The fast F4 apeture makes this the perfect lens of sports and wildlife photographers. This is the type of lens you see on the sidlines at professional sports games. Along with the fast F4 apeture Nikon's "Silent Wave" focusing delivers fast, super quiet response even in low light. terms such as "as fast and quiet as Nikon's AF-S model" are often heard by reviewers when examining and compairing other manufacturers lenses. So, if youv'e always wanted to get really close to the subject your'e shooting and are truly ready to make a serious commitment to your craft, this is the lens for you.Read full review
