I recently bought a used 580EX Speedlite (flash) for my older Canon camera. It was to replace the less sophisticated Canon flash that I had used. My old flash stopped working. My used flash was reasonably priced. It looks and works like it is new. This new flash has a lot of light output. The LCD display on the flash tells you the range of the flash with the settings (and background lighting?) used. It is significantly more powerful than my old flash. There are a lot of little features on this that I have not played with. I have not yet read the manual. The basic features were pretty intuitive, for me. The manual was readily available at the Canon website for a free download.

Unit is pristine in appearance and flash seems to work well. Only flaw is that the catchlight card that pops up will not stay up. It can be opened easily, but does not stay in place. Tried to bend the card a bit to create some friction to keep it in place, but no dice. Fortunately, I do not plan to use this feature as I have a large plastic dome to attach to the flash for diffused direct lighting.

I am using it as a master with another 430ex flash and it work perfectly. The output is great even in large rooms. The TTL light metering give you the exact light you will need for your subject, not matter if it is far or close to the flash. The flash burst is impressive and the H function for high speed pictures are feature that make a big different with alternative flashes. I recommend it 1000%

So far this flash has been a godsend with the quality of light it provides. However there remains a bit of a learning curve in mastering all its parameters and I have not handle a proper external flash in several years. At first my rebel eos T3 had a little trouble communicating with the flash especially when I set the camera on total auto. It got me stressed. For now I have the flash on the ETTL auto setting but the camera on manual. The lighting results in the images have been very satisfying. They should get better as I master the options better

The day you understand photography, you may want to extend your knowledge to lighting. When you learn what lighting effects could impact - you will move to second level of photography. I really like Canon Speedlite 580EXII. Very powerful and can handle multiple flash wirelessly. I use this as master and other as slave. Very simple to setup. Only issue you might have, battery drain so quickly. So you better buy some chargeable batteries and charger. If you are in wedding then this is best to buy battery pack with this flash, you will notice significant difference, sync quickly and fire quickly. So you will never miss the shot.

This speedlite is good for most situation and easy to set up remote with other flashes. GN is 58 that similar new Canon 600EX-RT GN 60 (60 meter with iso 100). I have three Canon 580 EX II. You must use diffuse while take picture for people. I personal more like Quantum QFlash that provide studio result. The good thing you can use Canon 580 EX II trigger the QFlash by using an adapter and disable Canon 580 II. However QFlash a lot heavier than Canon 580 II. I suggest that you should have at least two Canon 580 II when you shoot for better result.

Bought the 580 EX-II to replace a damaged 580 EX. Works very well, although the lever lock system with safety button is a little clunky. You have to depress the button with one hand while attempting to move the lever with the other hand. Not especially ergonomic, but it works with a little finessing. Flash exposure appears to be consistently good with short recycle times. The metal foot should be more durable than the plastic foot found on the 580 EX.

A flash makes the camera take better pictures when there isn't much light - obviously. What is not obvious is that this flash has an IR beam that helps the camera focus wehn it's basically dark. Halloween pictures were easy!

like the unit well - it is my second 580 EX II - they synch well and the hi speed synch is a great feature I use on location for lightning outside of the studio setting and am pleased with the results

Allows for some great photos when used as a master to multi-flash units, but a little involved to set up as the controls are not real intuitive, unless you read the devices' "bibles" carefully .
