I bought this while taking a digital photography class. I took many photos using this tripod and it helped me immensely to avoid camera shake. At first it was awkward to figure out where to make my adjustments, but the more I used it, the better it got. My instructor said it's not as stable as the expensive ones, but for what I use it for, that's ok. I do not have an expensive camera sitting on it. For amateur and personal use, I highly recommend it. It was among low cost tripods recommended by the Digital Photography School online.
I bought this tripod for a spotting scope. It was stable enough for viewing the stars but is not stable enough if you're scoping wildlife. As I was bringing the scope and tripod back in, the scope just came off of the stand even though the stand and scope were upright. Good for the price, good for light scoping, but not too good for scoping action or for mounting a camera to shoot live action.

The stand exceeded my expectations. It is stout compared to the lightweight compact aluminium stands in the same price range. The only downside is that I wouldn't really call it packable/portable. It is fairly bulky. But, overall I'm quite happy with it!
