Yes -- this tool works, and it works well.
This is one of those tools that just works, and it does it's job with aplomb. Good battery-testers are so hard to find that this was a joy to find. It is well-worth the money. I like to have the right tool to test any battery that comes along, thus it was a no-brainer to get this, more expensive model (as opposed to ZTS's lessor-expensive models). The MBT1 Battery Tester does it correctly: it applies a brief load upon the battery-under-test and measures it's real state of charge. And, exactly as it should -- it provides different connections for each type of battery-chemistry and size. That's the right way to do it. It's actually better than providing a selector-switch. This is intelligently designed: the labels on the instrument are crystal-clear, it has no battery of it's own to die on you, and it looks and acts like a real professional tool. Caution: It *is* easy to accidentally put your battery on the wrong terminal in a few cases, if you're not careful (as in my case I was testing AAA batteries). To really test the state-of-charge, the specific chemistry of that battery matters (NiMH vs Lithium for example). Learn to exercise a little care and you'll get it. Versatile and proper testing
I got the tester because I use both alkaline and NiMH batteries and wanted a tester that can do both. I had lots of batteries around that I did not know their availability state; this device helps determine that. Also I know testing with a load and not just voltage is the better way to assess this state. It is a little pricey but it is one device that covers two battery types and uses a better method of testing than the voltage-based-only testers.

Professional Quality Battery Tester
This battery tester can test about a dozen types of batteries. It does a sophisticated load test that shows the percentage of life remaining in the battery. It is very easy to use. With so many battery dependent items currently in the home, testing batteries can be very useful. I highly recommend this tester.

Good but not great!
I own the original ZTS multi-battery tester. I have had it for years and it still works, I purchased this newer version because it tests additional batteries that were not available on the original. The reason for only 4 stars is because they cheapened up this instrument. It weighs less and the body of it is less substantial.

Sorted out my battery box
Went through and sorted out my whole box of batteries and cells. Found loose cells that tested out to have 80% left, usable. Tossed out the duds. Found some Chinese button cells that were dead in the package, ready to surprise and frustrate me. I've know for years that just a voltage reading won't tell you much, you need to load a cell or battery. This tester is the first I've found that isn't just guessing.
