We bought this for a friend who would be hiking alone on the Appalachian trail. He started in Georgia hiking and is going for 45 days north to Tennessee. He sends us messages at each check point. It gives us some peace knowing he is ok. The location of where he starts the day or week is put in a message to our email so we can open on google maps and sometimes a picture of the shelter on the trail is available. I know there is a newer version but this has helped tracking his journey.

Shame on me for not doing better research on this before purchasing. At $150 +/- per year for a service subscription, I think this product is a poor value. Most Garmin (and perhaps other brands) GPS units will connect to Garmin Connect for free to give real time location tracking to someone at home.

I bought the spot 1 after using one on a sailboat delivery from New Castle New Hampshire to the USVI. We used the spot for friends to follow our trip. I was extremely accurate as our followers could see even what dock we were on as we traveled the waterway. I am going to use my spot in my business Captain Ed's Sailing out of Newburyport Ma. when by wife comes home from work she goes on line and can see where I am to. it is very accurate.
