I was a long-time Pentax guy, but never got around to buying this flagship model. I always felt that the Pentax LX was one of the finest camera ever built, certainly better looking than its immediate competitors, the Nikon F3 and Canon F1. In our digital world, I may not run too many rolls of film through it, but I still have a selection of 6 manual focus Pentax lenses and 8 others that will fit this camera. I have not yet attempted to operate it, but I am pleased that it was in excellent physical condition, as described. If the condition is any clue, I expect it to operate just fine. It may actually spend more time being a display item than a working camera, but I do intend to see how well it works. The only thing that was a surprise is that it did not come with the standard focusing screen; it has a grid screen, one of the 8 alternative screens that Pentax made for it. If that had been specified, it probably would not have affected my decision to purchase the camera. I'm happy I finally have my LX.Read full review

The 1980's gave the photography world a series of iconic camera designs, the Pentax LX, The Canon T90, the Olympus OM-3, the Nikon F3, and yes, even the Leica M6. Each of these was responsible for pushing the design envelope as far as technology enabled at the time. The LX is the king of the Pentax film line, with the MX a close second. Pentax packed the complete system concept into a body smaller and less expensive than the Nikon F3, the closest comparison. Need special finders, screens, drives, backs, you name it, it was available for the LX. One innovation not matched for 20 years was the dual-mode electrical/mechanical shutter. Have a battery die (which rarely happens with 6 months of usability out of a pair of button cells), go ahead and use the camera from 1/60 to the top shutter speeds. Not until the Leica M7 (1/60 and 1/125) and the Nikon FM3A was this feature offered again. As described in other reviews, finding a pretty, properly functional LX can take some time, but is worth it. Other than the foam seals and sticky mirror bumps, make sure your camera is complete, as small parts are a true challenge to track down. Mine was missing the motor drive socket cover, a unique part for the model. Strap lugs are also unique to the LX.Read full review
The LX was and still is arguably the best of the flagship cameras from Pentax or neck and neck with the MZ-S, but most LX bodies today are getting old and the sticky mirror syndrome and mushy bumpers are common. If you do find one in super good condition, you will truly fall in love with this camera. If you have one with issues, it may still be worth it to have repaired. Its greatest feature is the metering system, a very sensitive and accurate TTL system that can give superb results. It's a system camera or in other words a full array of accessories make this camera very versatile.
The Pentax LX was one of those great ideas that for some reason never took off. Clearly the LX is a pro level camera with all the features and system accessories needed. However for some reason, pro photographers never took to it. History aside, its clear that the LX is an iconic camera with everything you would need in a camera. The LX is compact like the Olympus OM series cameras (which I love) has the build of an old Nikon or Canon. Pros: -Compact metal body -Amazing metering, maybe the best for an SLR -Nice informative and uncluttered viewfinder -An unrivaled collection of K Mount lenses Con: -I can't find any other than the high price
This is certainly one of the finest SLR film cameras ever made. It has everything a photographer wants and nothing more. The quality of the camera body is extraordinary and the image quality of Pentax lenses is unsurpassed. The camera is expensive and can be expensive to maintain, but it is worth whatever you pay because the experience and ease of using the camera can't be beat.
