Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time (Sony PlayStation 3, 2009)
Ratchet & Clank is one of the better-known franchises on the PlayStation consoles. The franchise went to a whole other level with the release of the Future Series trilogy. The third game in this trilogy is known as Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time. This game mixes elements from past titles while adding unique features to create hours of gameplay. The plot in the Ratchet & Clank game focuses on time travel. The characters get control of a special device simply known as The Clock. Using this device, Ratchet is able to travel back to the past and rescue his friends from previous adventures. The Clock also allows Clank to unlock new powers and connect with people from his past. The action-adventure game splits up Ratchet and Clank through multiple levels and stories. Players will alternate levels as they play as either Ratchet or Clank. Clank's levels are more puzzle-based while Ratchet uses a lot of action to get past enemies and make it through obstacles.Along with the use of traditional gadgets and weapons that Ratchet and Clank typically have, there are several new weapons created for this PS3 platform game. In keeping up with the time travel theme, Clank can use special pads to duplicate the character and recreate actions. This allows players to set up Clank clones to build objects while the regular Clank goes off to complete other parts of a mission. One of Ratchet’s tools is a pair of Hover boots. Using these boots, the character can quickly zoom over surfaces and access places a lot more quickly. A special staff known as the Chronosceptor can also be used to help rebuild broken objects after they have been destroyed. An open-world concept was added to the Crack in Time title for PlayStation. This gives you the control of Ratchet’s ship and allows you to fly to multiple planets. While flying in the ship, you can shoot down enemies, earn power-ups, and access bonus areas. The side quests include separate goals and boss battles to go up against. The goal of A Crack in Time is to change events of the past and future so that Clank and his family can be rescued. Their final challenge includes beating the evil villain, Dr. Nefarious, and foiling a secret plan that he has been making. As you progress through the worlds, more missions will involve Ratchet and Clank interacting together. The PS3 release of A Crack in Time features stunning graphics, visuals, and digital animations available in full HD quality. An original soundtrack is used to provide gamers with original music specially composed to flow with levels and elements. The story connects to all of the other volumes in the series, allowing players to enjoy the continuity in the storyline from previous titles. Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time is available exclusively on the Sony PS3. The game is rated E10+ for violence and language.

I purchased this title for my son for the holidays just past in part to demonstrate my trust in him since this is not rated for 'Everyone' and he is hitting adolescence and his mother still tends to be a tad over-protective. Good news, tho', moms: unless you are trying to keep your kid in some kind of isolation ward, they're going to interact with their friends and you want to make sure that any rope that you give them with which to 'act their age' can still be controlled by you! 'Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time' is just the right type of rope. The violence is really mild, even compared to most cartoon that are targeted for the over-5 crowd but it is filled with a wonderful assortment of unique weapons (such as a "burp gun" that literally disables your opponents with belches of varying sizes. This game gives the user not only the standard First Person Shooter (FPS) experience of wielding a weapon against your foes but it also provides additional challenges and, as you progress through the game, it requires additional problem solving challenges that are rooted in mathematics (tho' it's not shoved in your face as a "math challenge".) It includes flight simulation and multiple character roles to aid anyone who doesn't think about how their actions affect the lives of others. Of course, none of this is 'advertised' (because, face it, how many kids (over the age of 7-8) bug their parents for the latest, greatest Educational game? But this isn't the singular concept/mode-of-play that has been the staple of "video games" (and not to imply that this is the first. It's just one of the best for kids over the age of 9-10.)
I do have one major complaint about this game, though, and it's one that I share with many parents: All of these games should be created so that there is at least one variation of the game that allows for multiple players. I don't want to send my kids to their rooms to play games. Heck, I like playing with them if only for the time together, but it's tough to justify allowing one kid to take control of the family room TV and driving everyone else away or, worse, making them angry. I'm beginning to wonder if I might not have been better off getting a Wii and a separate BD players... But that's not the fault of the designer(s) of this game. If it weren't for the fact that this is only a single player game then it would make my (rather short) list of all-time best games... (Well, that and the few bugs that I've found - but you have to work hard to expose 'em!!!)Read full review
Same Classic Ratchet and Clank formula with a few new time twists.
I am a huge fan of the Ratchet and Clank series. I played all console versions of this game. The Ratchet and Clank series manages to mix platforming and twitch based gunplay like no other game. This version of the game has a few new tweaks. The major tweak are the Clank's time bending puzzles. In these puzzles clank slits into different forms each form is a recording of himself from the past. This leads to the most challenging and original puzzles the Ratchet and Clank series has ever seen.
Pros: The game offers a lot of content for your buck. You get Zoni (time creatures) to collect. You can still purchase and update your weapons and armor (like in the previous games in the series). The developers also made it possible to customize your weapons but adding different effects to guns in the weapon customization menu (this is a new feature in the series). Another cool feature are the levitating jet boots. Jet boots existed in other ratchet games but this version has perfected their controls, nicely done Insomniac :) Also, the galaxy is littered with spherical moons each with its own stuff to collect. Exploration is fun, weee.
Cons: The graphics! The game's textures are 720p and feel aged. At times I felt like I was playing my old PS2 again. Also, the game has glitches! This version of the game has more glitches than any other version in the series. One time the texture of the floor disappeared (on the monolith planet) and Ratchet appeared to be walking in mid-air. Somehow the messed up condition of the planet got autosaved and the glitch wouldn't go away until I left the planet. There was one issue with character's voices disappearing during cut-scenes. Game testers, do your jobs :)
Bottom Line: This is the conclusion of the PS3 Ratchet and Clank storyline that started with Tools of Destruction. If you played the other ones, you might as well play this one as well :) Expect same fun gameplay the series is known for.Read full review
Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time is one more addition to the franchise we all know and love. The core gameplay remains largely the same, but the introduction of weapon customization and the occasional timing-based puzzle platform stage (you'll see) puts this game over the top.
Is it just me or do the Ratchet and Clank games seem to get shorter and shorter? You can beat this game in about 8 hours depending on the difficulty. It's a lot of fun, and the weapons seem to be more mainstreamed than previous versions. Other versions had weapons that you may never even use b/c they just weren't too effective.
The story mode is a little more serious this time around and provides fewer laughs. This is a bit disappointing because R&C has always been funny to play, like watching a comedy movie.
The game play is rock solid as always, and they didn't add any weird gameplay elements in this time around. Every gadget you use will have relevance.
There's not very many enemy types, and overall the game isn't very challenging for long time R&C vets. However, it is still a very fun game to play.Read full review
Presentation: 9 Out of 10
The makers of Ratchet & Clank over at Insomniac once again deliver a highly polished experience with an amazing story that wraps up the R&C Future Series. Plenty of extras, like animated advertisements, only enhance the gaming experience.
-
Graphics: 8.5 Out of 10
Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time is one of the best looking games in the series to date with a nice art style. It might not be as visually stimulating as its photo-realistic peers like Uncharted 2, but in no way does this hinder the game play experience.
-
Sound: 9 Out of 10
Ratchet and Clank has excellent voice work complements an appropriately themed soundtrack. With multiple radio stations that play during space exploration and by choosing the Hot Rod skin for your ship, you'll be cruising along looking pretty sweet while completing tons of interactive tasks.

Game play: 9 Out of 10
Another fine addition to the Ratchet & Clank series. Enjoyable mix of platforming, shooting and puzzle-solving with awesome weapons to use and level-up. The puzzle like Clank sections and time manipulations will surly test your wits and patience.

Lasting Appeal: 9 Out of 10
The main story line of the last installment of Ratchet & Clank Future can be beaten in about 12 hours, however taking the time to unlock everything, level up, and of not to mention the replay value alone ensures you will be satisfied and continue coming back for more.Read full review
