The academy and similar models are a great use for 1/72 war gaming. most of the hull is already cut at the waterline so a few modifications make it well suited as a fast attack ship of the time and looks good with other model triremes of various makes. there are some pretty large opening on the sides that can show into the model that can look funny with no rowers in there. A solution is to use the orion roman sailors kit and they do fit on the seats with some modification, with the water line version i had to cut the knees down off. they just fit in there. molded sails are are a plus for me.

One of several Biremes and Triremes in the 1/72 range, this is of a medium build. It still looks good compared to and with other models. More like a light fast attack ship meant for shallower river waters than a large sea faring warship we most know about. There are a lot of pluses to this set, on its own it stands pretty good but also has potential for many variations. Some pluses are that with a little modification can be turned into a water line version. I also used the interior seat planks (not really noticeable anyway, its pretty well covered) to make a corvus to make it more authentic for a roman ship. On another model I widened the hull and I really like that a lot. It has nice molded sails and the Orion roman sailors miniatures go well with it. The plastic is hard and glues well, I used non toxic. It is some what brittle to carve and cut but being careful is still workable and strong material. The same mold can be found under the IMAI maker and there is a Greek counter part version to this ship that IMAI makes as well. All in all I like the variety that can be made with the different models for a sea battle and this version is a good compromise for size and functionality. Read full review
