It does work, however, it is slow and Nikon is not the best company for software. Their initial software is mediocre and they never re-release software for an older product to support an operating system update. Also, everyone quit making quality film scanners for consumers. I think they were really foolish, based on the current demand for the product. They didn't consider all the people with film that wanted to get the picture to digital and do it themselves. So, now we are left with purchasing old (8-10 years) products that are no longer supported and subject to not being able to obtain software or repair on failed products. The newer units (3-6 years old) often sell for more than original purchase cost and don't have a warranty. Well, we have a predicament here: Do nothing, send them to a scanner house, or take a chance on an old product. I took the last option. If I hadn't studied the situation and found scanner software named Vuscan. I don't really know if I would have purchased anything. Vuscan works good, but not great. Lots of options and potentially good scanner features. I have obtained good scans of slides and negatives, but, not as great as I hoped. I have found that I can produce reasonably good scans for 4x6 printing. I seriously doubt if the scanner will product the scan for 8x10's consistently. In any event, to obtain an acceptable scan, I still have to work on it with digital software. I have an professional Epson flatbed with slide and film holder. It does a fair job with Vuscan, but the Nikon will marginally outperform it. The newer Epson might equal the scanner I purchased. I will keep scanning and wishing for something better. However, I find the selling prices of the better/newer units always seem to be just beyond what I want to pay.Read full review
This is an affordable alternative to flatbed scanners for those looking to make higher quality images from 35mm film. It runs great with VueScan software, as obviously Nikon's software is no longer supported or updated. It's imperative that you look for a totally serviced and cleaned model, as the internal mirrors become dirty over the years. You'll want to keep the scanner covered when not in use as well to avoid internal dirt.
We have scanned over 2000 frames with more to go with good results. We had a little trouble getting started because the free Nikon software had no Windows 7 (64bit) driver that we could find. But after we loaded the trial version from Vuescan 9.0.70, the Nikon Coolscan 4.03 (free) software used the Coolscan driver and worked OK. We needed a basic raw scan of each frame and used other common apps to make needed corrections. We purchased Silverfast 8.0 software that installed and worked, but it was too complicated for us, we could never even figure out how to select a frame to scan, after many efforts to find/get instructions from Silverfast, we gave up. We got quick response from them before purchase, not one reply to questions after purchase. We are not professionals, others could possibly use this Silverfast software, but not us. We have had only an occasional software lock ups, but they were quick and easy to rectify. Overall we feel that this scanner is a great product and very happy users.Read full review
The Nikon Coolscan IV delivers the goods, and is easy to set up. High resolution CCD, extremely sharp lens, USB interface. I advise purchasing one that's been fully serviced. ...A great film/slide scanner!

This scanner is awesome. Scans a million times faster than my old epson 4490 and the quality is much better. This guy delivers a quality product in a quality condition.

Great scanner, lovely colours. One con is that it takes a bit of tinkering to get the original software to work, or the latest VueScan is a great (even better option).

I have never been able to get my scanner to work. But I am convinced it is a fine piece of equipment and have not given up. It is recognized by the system, both Linux and Windows XP, but not by the software for scanning. Clearly the usb is getting read with the initial detailed system information, but the scanning software Vuscan and Nkscan on Windows XP or scanimage and xscan? on Linux fail to recognize the scanner. I have taken it apart once to look for mechanical problems and found nothing. I plan to do that again tomorrow. I still am happy with my purchase and think that I will eventually get it to work.
save my scanner by getting the negative holder out and cleaned /oiled and returned the scanner very fast. It runs great
