As Blu Ray gives way to 4K, with other / later tech on the way, DVD players are no longer a hot or current category. That said, I still use mine regularly. As a longtime hobbyist, I've looked into this subject pretty thoroughly, and have owned several other brands and models of player. The Oppo 980 is the best of breed that I ever found. The resolution "up-converting" may be more of an illusory gimmick than anything substantial -- I'm not sure -- but the results are satisfying. Probably one of the player's most important features is its ability to ignore disc region stipulations (this may require a firmware change -- I don't recall, offhand), and to convert PAL format to NTSC within the player (no extra equipment required) and on the fly. This is a real boon for anyone who wishes access to foreign disc titles, and **uncut** original Euro or Asian versions of some notable movies. (There are many fine films that have been utterly ruined for U.S. distribution.) What else to say ? The remote is a bit on the small side with tiny buttons for some hands, but it's not a major issue. The player can remember where you left off watching a movie, and return there the next day. The USB port for attaching a thumbdrive for playback is a nice feature. It would have been nicer still if the player supported more than just a few video file formats from the USB, or if this feature supported NTFS-formatted sticks -- which it doesn't. I thought so highly of this Oppo model that I went to some lengths to help obtain them for relatives and friends. Oppo has also made superior Blu-Ray players, although the better models of those were far more expensive than most of the competition. Read full review

DVD Player is top quality overall. However, it works best in a specific application. It really shines if you have a dedicated theater with a separate scaler and deinterlacer(Lumagen, etc)since it does not have the best deinterlacer and scaler inside. This player will output 480i over HDMI (hardly any will do that). Thus you can output the native DVD content over HDMI to another scaler and do the deinterlacing and scaling there. This is as good as an SDI input costing hundreds more. Other features that lend itself to a dedicated home theater: 1) you can blank out the front panel lights for a dark environment. 2) you can design your own home screen when the player starts up. neat! 3) it has an audio-only mode to turn off video for CDs. 4) it has a higher quality jpeg encoder so 1080 jpegs don't have to be scaled down to 480 and then back up to 1080. The jpegs look MUCH improved on the big screen. 5) it has a USB port. Plugging in a thumb drive with photos means instant slide show with high quality 1080 imaging. I would not buy this DVD player as an upconverting player though (Oppo sells better ones at this price point). There are others that use better deinterlacing chipsets (Faroudja, eg) than this one. But for a theater with a dedicated deinterlacer it's FANTASTIC!Read full review
I bought this based on excellent reviews of it's CD, SACD and DVD-A playback. I run it to a 2 channel receiver (Marantz PM5004) and it has brought sounds that I have never heard to my CDs. Too be honest a lot of that is probably the Marantz, but they are an excellent combo and finding this unit on here saved me about a couple hundred from the Marantz CD player I was going to buy and I used that money to buy a Pro-ject Debut III also from e-bay!! I'm still waiting for that one, but I will review that one as well when I receive it. + Very warm sound and accurate sound. + Plays all the audio discs you would want. (CD, SACD, DVD-A and HDCD) - Unless I am doing something wrong it will not play Apple Lossless files through the USB port, and I have read it does not play FLAC either. So audio through USB is a no go unless you want to resort to MP3... which for the past 10 years I would probably tell you there is no difference until I got this Oppo/Marantz combo going. (Still using my 15 year old JBL N28's which sound amazing.) - Video upconverter is weak to today's standards, but this DVD player is about 4 years old. Once you go Blu-ray you don't go back... Just so you know I have listened to mostly digital for the last 10-15 years mostly through headphones or car stereo. I had an old Yamaha CD and receiver sitting in my closets through the last 2 moves and never set it up at my current place. So my perception of how much better it sounds may be huge compared to someone who already has a decent setup.Read full review
First and foremost, I am a past OppoDigital customer. I was amazed at the quality of their 970HD unit. I sent them an email as I wanted to know what unit would be best on my 1080i tv set...they told me that this one would be best for the 1080i sets and was pleased that they didn't automatically push the most expensive model. They release firmware updates as needed and that's a big plus for future support of new features and bug fixes (if they have them). The remote is very easy to use and laid out well. It's one of the better remotes compared to that of the other few remotes I have for other devices. The picture quality is fabulous and love the automatic formatting between 4:3 content and widescreen content. I dislike having 4:3 content stretched and would rather watch it normally. The options give you the options for the unit to automatically detect and display content. It's very handy although they warn you using this mode on CRT and Plasma tvs...I use it on my CRT/970HD unit and haven't had any burn in problems. Oppo is like a great little secret...most people may have never heard of them; but those that find their products, stay with them from here on out!Read full review
This product was just as described. excellent product and I recommend if you are an audiophile or just like to take full advantage of CD recordings that are available in SACD or DVD-A. If you do research on this product I dont think you will find any negative comments. I didnt. I researched this product for quite a while before buying it. This product also plays MP3,which I couldnt tell for sure in the documentation, but I loaded one of mine and it did play. It doesnt do BluRay or HD DVD, and it does make this clear in the documentation. I wasnt buying it for the Video aspect. just for audio. So it worked for me. If you have HDMI input on your receiver its an easy hookup. I hooked mine up to my Yamaha RX-V463 Receiver, which has the HDMI input. I have listened to two SACDs that I have purchased. Pink Floyd "Darkside of the Moon." and Elton John "Goodbye Yellowbrick Road". Amazing sound quality and seperation. there are different instruments coming through the seperate channels. Its a whole new experience in listening pleasure with albums I have listened to 100's of times!! I highly recommend this Oppo DV-980 DVD player. for the quality and price you cannot be sorry! I found this product on Ebay for a great price.Read full review
