I am a huge fan of the Disgaea series (actually pretty much any game produced by NIS), so, of course, I played the previous 2 Disgaeas and loved every minute of them (still playing them actually, lol). So when I heard that a new Disgaea title was coming out for the PS3, I was ecstatic. However, once I actually started playing it, I have to say that I was kind of disappointed. Where the previous games racked you with sidesplitting humor through the childish antics of the main cast from the word go, this one started out...actually kind of stupid. Maybe I've just gotten more mature or I built it up too much in my mind before I got it (did that before Kingdom Hearts II and somewhat ruined it for myself), but this game was not nearly as funny (I mean, it deserved a chuckle here and there, but did not compare at all with the others). Now granted I've only put 5 hours into it, so it might get better, but the other games did not make you wait at all before they started throwing the punchlines. However, amount of humor aside, this is really a great game (especially if you liked the previous chapters in the series). It has the same 2-D sprites (which I actually think is a good thing, lol), and the same grid-based battle system of the other two. But there are some new revisions such as the ability to combine your attacks to dish out awesome looking combos. You also have the ability now to arrange your "classmates" in different positions around your classroom to give you more of a chance to tag team. In addition (and I'm not too sold on this yet), you can actually buy your abilities from a shop instead of spending massive hours learning them through battles (good for those who favor cheat codes and shortcuts, but for those of us who liked leveling up our people in the item world for mind-numbing amounts of time to power them up, it's kind of a let down). So, in all, if you liked the first 2, get this game. If you haven't played the other 2 though, make sure you pick those up first before jumping for this one, because from what I've seen this one definitely falls short (I'm thinking that it'll get better once Laharl and Etna join the mix, but I won't count my chickens just yet...) My rating (so far...) 7/10 EDIT: Alright, I have officially beaten the game, and overall, I'm quite impressed. My opinion still stands on the storyline (it's kinda lame), but it does have its funny moments. Where it really begins to shine though is the post-story. Though, once again, the story itself doesn't offer anything exciting, the sheer amount of STUFF you can do drastically increases. With the downloadable content you are able to create new classes, go through a whole side-story with the heroine of the game, and obtain your favorite cameo characters such as Gig (Soul Nomad), Zetta (Makai Kingdom), Adell (Disgaea 2), and Marjoly (Rhapsody). In all, if you like the Disgaea series (along with everything else NIS spits out), this is a must have game. The tried and true battle mechanics are just as enjoyable as ever (with some minor switches to keep things interesting), and (though I think Nippon Ichi could have done a little better on this one) the story will keep you amused (it does have some of the Disgaea humor we've come to love in there, trust me). However, if you're new to the strategy RPG genre, I suggest you look at others first, such as: FF Tactics, Makai Kingdom (the game that sold me on NIS FOREVA XD), or one of the earlier installments in the series.Read full review
I loved the first two disgaea's and was so impatient as to wait for the uk release of the third bought it from usa. The stroy is just as random (and childishly funny) as the first where you play hero confused demon, or a demon confused hero as he strives to kill his father and gain the title of overlord (even though he is heir, lol.) Exact same graphics (2D sprites in 3D maps), which may disappoint considering the big leaps in graphic capabilities from the ps2 to ps3, but good in keeping within conformity of its predecessors. Slightly more complex geo system and arguably much harder maps from the start compared to the other two games. Same types of characters maybe lacking in any extra classes that may generate more excitement, different way of learning skills in the sense that you pay for them with mana- very limiting and means that you have to spend ages getting the appropriate mana for the appropriate character- not only to gain abilities but also to pass bills etc... A lot of extra additions to the game that establih a differentiation between the other two- I particularly like the magichange ability where a monster can change into a weapon and merge with a character, even crazier levelling of items and characters allowing the causing of millions/billions of damage. Overall another top title in the disgaea series, the story follows its same random series of events with insanely crazy story characters, much more frustrating and time consuming I would argue though and possibly pushing the point of repetitiveness that drops my rating from an excellent to a good, but well worth buying.Read full review
If you are a fan of the Disgaea franchise, then you will undoubtably enjoy this game. The winning 2D formula hasn't changed - both to its credit and discredit. Pros: • Offers new and even more in-depth ways to level and customize your characters. • More puzzles and expands much more in depth on the concept of Geo Blocks. • Improves on attack animations and they seem to be a bit quicker to move the game along • Offers a few additional character classes. • Story is amusing, occasionally comical and voice work is well done. • Keeps to the traditional leveling obsessed gameplay as its predecessors. Cons: • Sprite qualities virtually untouched from the PS2 versions. • If you've played the other games, then you've seen 90% of the character classes before. • Camera angles STILL are extremely irritating at times. Overall, if you have 100-200 hours of your life to spare and love crunching character levels in a deep tactics based game, then I suggest this Disgaea 3.Read full review
This game uses a different skill system than previous Disgaeas. The weapon proficiency system is also gone. Everything is learned through Mana so Mana much more important in this game. The story is also great. Filled with deceit, humor and tear-jerking scenes. If you liked the previous Disgaeas, you'll love this one as well. Disgaea is known for its massive post-game content. It is no different here. If you intend on getting all the trophies in this game, be prepared to give this game hundreds of hours. One of the hardest trophies to achieve is dealing 10 billion damage. That's right, 10,000,000,000 damage in one turn. Disgaea 3 is very much worth your money and will entertain you for hours on end.
Disgaea 3 is a fun game. It is a good strategy game. Although the graphics are dated for a PS3 game. It has a distinct comic approach to the story line. Some scenes had me in stitches. Things like the heroes main agenda, to some of the enemies encounters were laugh out loud funny. The one thing I noticed though is yes the Disgaea franchise is well known for having a great variety on how to level your character. And I agree there is a lot to customization. But in the end I found the game to be a level grinding game. And in the end it became repetitive. It is an enjoyable game and it's good if you plan to pick it up for a hot minute and put it down again and play again later like a puzzle or card game. If you want a game that's going to keep you busy for a long time I don't think this is it. Well I hope you found my rating fair and useful.Read full review

What I like about this game is how deep it is, you can level almost anything: your caracters (to lvl 9999!), armor, weapons, stats, etc. One thing I dont really like is the fact the game looks like the previous Disgaea games for ps2, I think since this is a game for PS3 and given the capacity of a blu-ray disc, NIS could have pumped a bit the graphics, I'm not really asking for 3D, but for hi-def 2D graphics.
Make no mistake, I love this game. It has depth, it has content, it has superb voice acting, it has dialogue that will have you laughing out loud, literally. The storyline itself isn't terribly long (maybe only 40 to 60 hours, at most), but the game has so much content in it, you could easily spend over 300. If you like strategy RPG's, this is the flagship of all hardcore SRPGs. That being said...the only flaw this game have it looks like it could have been on the PlayStation 2. The characters are sprites (seriously, low-res sprites on the PS3?) and the graphics aren't terribly far off from how they were on the previous game on the series. The game has plenty of charm, and I personally love the graphics for what they are. That said, if you can't handle sprited characters and even a terribly gimped camera (hell, it can only view the battle field from 12 set point positions. PS3!), and are tempted to dabble with the SRPG genre, this is probably not the place to start.Read full review
Personally, I enjoy Turn-Based Strategy games more than RTS games, so this game is absolutley perfect for me! The game is also hilarious! the graphics are retro, which I love, but they could be a little cleaner... However, the gamplay is stellar! I have no issues with the sound, but there is nothing particularly great about it. With tons of side quests and extentions of the story, this game has a wonderfully high replay value. I have been playing it for more than a year and I haven't completely finished it yet! It is a very hard game though, but who doesn't like a challenge? I give it a 5!
