This is an all in one unit - hook up your cable internet, connect up to four wired computers and setup the WiFi for mobile access (Laptops/Netbooks/Cellphones/etc) ... The only drawback is this is an older gateway that needs a firmware update - apparently hard to find. But this functions perfectly so far and seems to have little issues. It will restart on it's own if it has a problem - likely a provider issue - and quickly restore access. I have enjoyed using it for gaming, surfing the web and watching streaming videos via my Cable Internet connection. I wanted one device instead of two or three sitting on my table serving internet, so I bought this item, in addition - I likely save $5 a month on my cable bill because I'm not leasing their modem.
The descriptions of this item I found on the Internet indicate a number of wireless security options that don't seem to apply to the Comcast-branded version. In the Comcast screen, WEP is the only option available; I don't see any settings for WPA. Links to the product manual on the Cisco/Linksys web sites appear to be dead; the PDF may no longer be available. There don't appear to be any available firmware updates which is unfortunate, because a number of sites seem to indicate the router is not entirely reliable. I haven't yet tested it enough to know. Default username/password: comcast/1234 ***UPDATE*** This router is TOTAL JUNK. It ended up in the electronics recycling. Comcast tech came out, was surprised to find we had it, showed me the logs of all the dropped packets etc etc. I initially bought it without doing a lot of research, it seemed like a good deal. Research after the fact revealed that everybody has problems with it. Since the firmware can't be updated, that should be a total dealbreaker -- DO NOT BUY.Read full review
ONE mention that has to be said... TIME WARNER IS A RIP-OFF!!!!! GO ahead and get your own router and Time Warner will charge you for NETWORKING and not alleviate the rental cost of putting in your own equipment. Thus you will end up paying; Basic Cable, Internet Service, and personal networking cost... Which is Time Warners way to keep you paying the same out of pocket. It should be argued that service from inside the wall it is the customers responsibility...but since this router has 4 switch (Cat 5) output plus Wireless output TIME WARNER considers this as NETWORKING in your own home or business and TIME WARNER will charge you additional fees. This extra fee is tallied to your bill if you opt against using a TIME WARNER ISSUED ROUTER that has the same wireless, in my case the POS (UBEE) router/switch was half as fast as this Linksys...which can be purchased new on Ebay for $9.00 dollars. Thus you are guaranteed to NOT get fast quality wireless speed as using this Linksys system that is double quality over TIME WARNER crap you get. The OUT that I was told is since I am using my OWN ROUTER (This quality Linksys) I will be CHARGED ONE DOLLAR less ($1) on my current monthly fee. TOTAL RIP OFF SCAM TO CUSTOMERS!!! SOMEBODY NEEDS TO AUDIT TIME WARNER AND THE MONOPOLY rates they are charging us!!! As for this WIRELESS ROUTER THE Linksys WCG200... IT is a quality piece of equipment but again... If you buy it to save money, TIME WARNER has a plan to keep ripping you off!!! SOMEBODY really needs to start action against this MONOPOLY SCAMMERS and get us connected to the FREE internet! Other INTERNATIONAL COUNTRIES are blocking USA doors due to this rip-off program!!! CAN you blame them??? If there are concerns on the actual billing, as I demanded and received the fee schedule. Before YOU make a change CALL and get price QUOTES beforehand!!! It may make you sick once you find out that you will still have to pay the same fees afterwords. This product (Linksys) is definately an improvement but you will have to keep paying monthly for router/switch service ON YOUR OWN EQUIPMENT!!!! TIME WARNER has managed to keep screwing over customers and sucking the life from us after we UPGRADE with PERSONAL COMMUNICATION equipment/products such as this router.Read full review
I've used a device like this for several years. Finding it on ebay for super cheep really helped me save money by not making me spend money on the cable companies modem which would cost several dollars monthly. Receiving this device helped so much in routing my internet and transmitting wifi. The only complaint I have is when I first received the device the wifi was not working until I changed the name of the network in the router itself. I had no idea how to get the wifi working. I had to go online to linksys.com and talk with technical support only to figure out I could not get assistance with the product. The online tech told me to read the manual she sent me in a link. I would suggest to the future sellers of this product to inform the costumer that they need to change the network name from it's default to a personalized network name. This product is far superior to any other product in it's field. It's in expensive and gets the job done without spending large amounts of money on products that do the same thing. Great Product A++Read full review
I bought the WCG200-CC two weeks ago and was immediately impressed with the number of features available on this inexpensive gateway. It has wireless, a 4-port router, a cable modem and a USB port (for connecting a USB printer to the network), all-in-one! I believe while this router is "Comcast" specific, it also sells as Linksys WCG200 for other cable providers (like Time Warner etc...). This gateway is DOCSIS 2.0 compliant, so if you're looking for a DOCSIS 3.0 gateway, you may want to look at other alternatives (e.g. SBG6580). FYI, not every customer is able to get DOCSIS 3.0 speeds (Upload/Download) at their addresses, so call your cable provider first to ensure availability. Else, you'll be paying top $$$ for no good reason (note: LAN speeds are often not a top priority for most, unless you have a network of latest and greatest computers with a Wireless-N and/or Gigabit-Ethernet). Overall, I'd highly recommend this gateway if you're on a budget.Read full review
