Do you dare compete in The Challenge of Nexar? You must fly through space destroying radioactive beacons and flying saucers in over 99 levels of play. Only the best will make it through and survive. At first glance, The Challenge of Nexar seems to be a first-person perspective flying game. You are soaring through a tunnel with objects originating from the center, similar to space combat games such as Starmaster or Star Raiders. However, instead of firing from a first-person perspective, you control a free-floating cross-hair cursor that fires missiles which travel toward the center of the screen and will take damage if hit by an enemy object. Points are awarded for destroying enemy saucers and beacons, and players get a bonus shield every 10,000 points. To advance to the next level, you must destroy six beacons before time runs out. You can start the game with three shields (left difficulty switch 'B') or five shields (left Skill Switch 'B'). Set the right difficulty switch to 'A' and you will lose a shield if time runs out on a level. Set the right difficulty switch to 'B' and the game ends if time runs out on a level. There are three variations of The Challenge of Nexar -- the first two are practice games, and the third is the "actual" game.
