Earth is in danger. The Russo-American Mercantile (RAM) has activated the Doomsday Laser and plans on pointing it directly at the planet! The New Earth Organization (NEO) has learned of this situation and calls on you to disarm it. Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday is a science-fiction role-playing game in the tradition of Strategic Simulations Inc.'s Advanced Dungeons & Dragons "Gold Box" series on the computer (Pool of Radiance, Treasures of the Savage Frontier and several more).
Choose a party of six adventurers from three races (human, desert runner and tinker), select their gender, career (rocket jock, medic, warrior, or rogue) and "roll" for various attributes such as strength, dexterity, constitution, charisma and technology. Characters can also specialize in skills that can help the party as they embark on their intergalactic adventure. Some of these skills include programming, first aid, repairing rockets, zero-gravity maneuvering and various others.
There are two main viewpoints used within the game: an overhead land-based and first-person ship perspective. Combat on land involves moving a limited amount of spaces (depending on your character) and choosing to either attack, defend or use one of fifty different items found in the game. This 8-Meg cartridge also features battery backup to save up to three games in progress, and includes an eighty-page manual complete with hints and maps. Is the game moving too slow for your tastes? Players can increase or decrease the game's speed to one of five different settings.
One of the top 10 Genesis games...an underrated gem!
In short, this is a fantastic game for the Sega Genesis. I played this back when it came out and was absolutely won over by the unique and varied gameplay. I recently purchased a used copy on Ebay and played through it again. It's just as good as I remembered.
At its core, Buck Rogers is a turn based strategy. Unlike Shining Force, here you travel around a map and engage in random battles, similar to the Final Fantasy games. When you start a battle, you actually get to move the characters around the battlefield and take advantage of the environment during the fight. After the battle, you can collect the opponents weapons and armor, which is a unique feature not found in too many other games. In addition to the standard scenarios, there are also space battles of a completely different nature adding to the variety of the game.
The good: Solid strategy and good variety of weapons/enemies. Decent story line. Lots of side quests to lengthen the game. Collecting, using, selling opponents weapons and armor motivates you to explore areas with unique weaponry. Space battles add to the variety.
The bad: Game is a little too short, even with the side quests. The space battles can go South pretty quick resulting in a restart from the last save.
Summary: A great game!! I would highly recommend to any Sega Genesis owner that also likes sci-fi or great strategy RPG type games.Read full review
