I bought 2 copies, one was a gift. I haven't read mine but the gifted one has been read and loved. I highly recommend this book.

For years I have wanted to read this book. Always been too busy or never thought about it. Finally retired and ordered it looking forward to a controversial yet compelling novel. After all it stirred up the whole world it must be rivioting, right? It's all gobbledegook. Leviticus is easier and more enjoyable to read. I thought maybe it was just the first chapter which was some kind of a dream, but no, it keeps going. Not worth the effort to uwind all the obfuscation.

The book deal was okay. Good copy, good price and quick delivery. The writer puts more descriptive detail in the story, and that takes time to read and then the detail doesn't seem to relate to the story in a very important way. Early in a book detail is important to set the scenes properly, after that, not so much in my opinion. Rushdie is by all accounts an outstanding writer. This book gave me too much to digest, too early on, and it seemed too much. Don't know of a better way to put it.

I bought this book to see for myself what all the controversy was all about. The book mostly deals with issues of identity, immigration and language through the adventures of two Hindu Muslims in Britain. Nothing controversial there, people who have lived abroad would find this part quite interesting and relevant. The parts that I believe eventually led to the death fatwa for Rushdie are the chapters that deal with the life of Mohammed, angel Gibreel, the ayetollah. The author gives an alternative version of the official history of Islam, presents Mohammed as a common person with his flaws rather than a prophet, has a few less than kind words for the ayetollah. Overall, I think the book presents a different and fresh perspective on Islam. As a Muslim, I enjoyed the book and wasn't offended by the author's ideas.Read full review
Book is in great shape. I had wanted to read when first published and then when the author was attacked it reminded me I hadn’t read the book yet!

Salman Rushdie's "Satanic Verses" in allegorical, topical fashion discovers origin and underpinning of Mohammad's philosophy and religion, Islam. All immortal souls should read, evaluate to be wise in living, and be safe and prepared for contingency. Don't be afraid, be brave; put some blood in your eye and read. The ideology war continues: there's no tolerance in Islam, whether that's the terrorists or not; the regular Muslim is at least accessory if not actual accomplice by apathy, passive or active complicity. Be wise, know and be ready; know the lay of the land and the array of battle of ideas and religion- even in blood and real combat as it comes to that. I'm christian, have compassion for all, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Druid, Voodoo, what-elso but am ready to defend when confronted by lethal threat, subtle and miscellaneous, firearms, booby-traps, bombs, suiciders, what have you. Dangerous times. Get this book and read. Informative, enjoyable story-tell, inciteful. Recommend strongly, even Muslims should read, maybe especially Muslims. I'm also writing "Thirteen (13) Secular Papers", kind of a twenty-first (21st) century version update of sixteenth (16th) century christian reformer Martin Luther's "Ninety-five Theses" posted on the Wittenberg castle door and declarations at Mainz, Worms and Wartburg, Germany; early in-development drafts available at my e-mail address. Thanks for the opportunity to offer invaluable assessment. Ciao, Jim Mc Govern (e-mail: m.mcgovern2@worldnet.att.net)Read full review
It is a extremely intense book and leaves you wondering for the first few chapters who is the good and who is the evil. I must say though, it isn't a read for the common man. You need a vast vocabulary and knowledge of the meaning of the words plus be able to use phonics for the characters have, I believe, Arabic names. All in all ... I'm hooked!

I bought this book because I have heard much about it and wanted to see for myself the quality of material and readability of this particular work. I have just begun to read this book and find it interesting but I'm not sure I would recommend it for someone else unless I knew that they enjoyed Shakesspearian literature or were used to metaforeic writing because unless you are an avid reader this book will quickly become burdensome to keep up with.
