Telescopes are an educational tool that provide the ability for individuals and families to explore the night sky. When shopping for a reflector telescope, there are several factors to consider. The Celestron NexStar 130SLT offers the advantage of fully computerized hand control in a sleek black scope. You can automatically swing to any of the more than 4,000 objects in the database, which include more than 600 galaxies, dozens of binary stars and 300 clusters. The Newtonian design and five-inch primary mirror offers color-corrected views that are well suited for astronomy. Newtonian telescopes are based on Newton’s design, using concave mirrors for magnification, which allows the telescope to take in more light without the light breaking into colors. Like other reflector telescopes, the NexStar telescope offers greater light gathering power than other designs; however, the mirrors may require periodic alignment. Using the Celestron NexStar Telescope, you can view the polar ice caps on Mars, Saturn’s rings, the surface of the moon, Jupiter’s cloud belts and the Great Red Spot, and the Messier objects. The wide field of view is perfect for viewing objects in deep space, such as the Orion Nebula and star clusters. Setup and alignment is designed to be easy enough, even for a beginner. The legs can be adjusted for viewing objects from a standing or sitting position. The SkyAlign technology and star pointer finder scope enable you to easily set up the scope’s tracking, even without specific knowledge of the objects you select for alignment. To get started, you will need to level the tripod, input some information about your location, date and time, and then align on any three bright celestial objects and let the computer do the rest. In addition, fine-tuning the alignment of the optics is easy with this scope. The Celestron NexStar 130SLT Telescope is an elegant and user-friendly instrument offered at a competitive price for the quality of its components and ease of operation. The telescope has a motorized mount type, an aperture of 130mm, and aperture modes of 100-150mm. The focal length is 650mm and the focal ratio is f5. The apparent field of view is 1.9 degrees and the linear field of view at 1000 yards is 91 feet. The instrument is compatible with two-inch eyepieces and includes a tighter 9mm eyepiece that displays larger details and a wider 25mm eyepiece for viewing galaxies. The magnification of the eyepiece is 26x/72x and the highest magnification is 307x, while the lowest magnification is 19x. The Celestron NexStar 130SLT has a light gathering power of 345x. The Celestron 130SLT telescope comes with an adjustable steel tripod that features an accessory tray and quick-release fork arm mount. This design allows you to set up the telescope in minutes without the need for special tools. This Celestron telescope has an auxiliary port to work with a GPS accessory and other accessories. NSOL telescope control software is included to enable basic control of the scope using your computer, and “The Sky” astronomy software disk is a quality software planetarium for use on your computer or laptop. Optional accessories include the RS-232 cable and NexRemote telescope control software for advanced control.
I am a novice when it comes to telescopes. But I have to say this scope is really easy to use. I have a 7 and 8 year old and they really love looking at the moon. You can even see Jupiter. It's small but once focused you can even make out the color bands. Overall, great scope.
I received this around the end of August 2018. I used it once, and the arm quit working. I sent the arm back to Celestron for repair. I got it back about 10-15 days later. I purchased the StarSense accessories. I went to set up and calibrate the StarSense, and the arm quit working again. I got around $1000.00 of Celestron Products that I cannot use because so far they can't supply me with a control arm that works for any period of time.
This is a great grab-n-go scope. It is light, easily and quickly setup. It not only enables you to use 1.25" eyepieces but 2" also. The skyalign works right out of the box. The only drawback to this scope if your looking to get really personal with planetary or deep space objects is the small aperture. It is just enough to see objects but not to get much detail. For luna or solar viewing its great. Don't get me wrong, you can see the planets and DSO's but not up close, Jupiter you can see four moons, Saturn you can see rings and moons, etc..... It has a variety of accessories such as solar filters, Sky Scout with Skyconnect etc.....All around this scope has what you need to get started and to have as a second quick go scope. Additional eyepieces expand its versatility.
Perfect for expierienced users and new to astronomy telescope!
I purchased this Telescope new and within 30 minutes I was looking at the Andromeda Galaxy! The set up is so easy and sturdy. The alignment process worked the first time I tried and had so many objects in the telescope's database, I didn't know what to look at first! I looked at the Andromeda galaxy and the 2 in the big dipper then selected Neptune on the menu, It was small but I bought a 6 mm and 4mm Plossl eyepiece along with a 2X barlow and just using the 4mm lens, it came in much larger and could recognize the blue planet, I even saw Uranus later in the year. I must say however, because of the large 5 inch aperture, it is awe inspiring to look outside of our own galaxy and look at the deep space objects. This scope collects ALOT of light and can see many nebula and galaxies and star clusters. I was very happy with the purchase.Read full review
After properly collimation and upgrading the eyepieces, this telescope is a bargin. While no telescope will give you visual images like obtained by the Hubble space telescope, this one will keep you interested for years. Even slightly light polluted sites will give you decent views of deep space objects. Good seeing conditions, averted vision, and dark adapted eyes will keep you wanting to spend more time outside under the stars. The motorized computer controlled mount makes observing easy for the beginner to intermediate user. Do your homework and learn how to "Observe". Mandatory eyepiece upgrades are necessary for best results. Any brand better quality eyepieces in the range of $50 to $70 for each will make observing a lot more pleasing! And YES, spending the money on more expensive eyepieces will make ANY telescope better. Explorer Scientific eyepieces can cost you "HALF" of what the telescope is for each eyepiece, but will provide much, much, much better images! Better quality eyepieces will last a lifetime when you decide to get better and bigger telescopes. This is a scientific instrument, treat it as such and it will last for years!Read full review
