II read that Singer designed this for people who make Cosplay costumes because they use thicker materials than normal. For the price I think it is a great deal. As far as calling heavy duty I dont know. It's not an industrial machine, but it is faster than a notmal sewing machine. It is better than I expected it to be for the price.
