Monster Hunter Rise is a great way to jump into the series. You dont need to have played any other Monster Hunter games as the story in each game in the series are pretty much self contained. The game looks great for the Switch, and the framerate is solid, and I havent noticed any slowdown (NOTE: My experience comes from playing the game in docked mode, so it may play a lil different performance-wise, so Im unable to speak on how it plays in handheld mode). Definitely play solo for a little while so you get your barrings, and concentrate on the village quest (the quests that are design to be solo'ed) before you jump into multiplayer. Dont be afraid to look up videos or guides for info on anything you re having trouble with. Theres a lot of great info in the menus that can help a lot. It shows things like enemy weak spots, which elements and/or status effects the monster is weak, too. Make sure you try out all the weapons and pick one to work on getting it powered up by upgrading it at the blacksmith. The Sword + Shield and Long Sword are two weapons that are fairly easy to pick up and use effectively. You might have to hunt a monster a few times to get enough materials to make the armor pieces or weapons you want. You can mix and match pieces of armor, so concentrate on the skills each piece of armor has. There is a small elemental resistance bonus for wearing 3,4 or 5, but dont base your choices off of that. You can look up armor sets people have made, but you might not have the decorations or talisman needed to complete the set.Read full review

The graphics aren’t the best, and the areas seem way more constricted and less immersive compared to World. They removed a lot of the best features in World too, such as the crush claw, the slinger, and having a large bedroom to fully decorate with pets you’d collected, leaving the game feeling kind of empty. Overall, I’ll just go back to World I suppose. I’m definitely unimpressed by this installment.

Monster Hunter games have always to me been a bit daunting to learn, but RISE is perfect for beginners and great for veterans of the MH series! The graphics and audio in this game are the best that I’ve seen. With additional DLC available and the added function of winning supplies and gear in daily lotteries by using Nintendo Amibos,, there is no lack of available variety and fun!
