Reviewing a Yoko Kanno sound track is like reviewing twenty different artist and bands in a single paragraph. This composer does it all, and extremely well. Even when you hear influences from other songs and artists, the music is delivered much more complete and complex than from those original sources that it scarcely matters. Sort of like Mozart using a simple folk tune, creating an entire opera out of it, and compressing it back down into a six minute pop song. This project (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) brought more of a rock and synth attitude out in the music, reflecting the deep caverns between the tall buildings and bright lights of a future gone cyberpunk to the extreme. I particularly like “velveteen”; a perfect techno-Goth theme. “fish-silent cruise”, is a subtle and mesmerizing trip, and “Inner Universe” is simply beautiful. Put this disc in, set back, and prepare to be transported to a place where light is conscious, and micro circuits the size of cities sing.Read full review
