This is a great GPS but because of its 2D maps it would not by some be considered one of the big boys. It functions very much like a portable Streetpilot 3. The Streetpilot3 was a brick and could not find a home on hardly any dashboard. The mini pilot can hand from the rear view mirror or sid on a console. Because it's display is monochrome it is very easy to read. It signal acquisition time is fair but one has to wait about a minute. What makes it able to soar with the Big Boys? As i said it depend on your use. I use it both on my sailboat and bicycle. It has programmable routes and waypoints. It also tracks elevation and when combined with elavation at beginning and ending speed on incline angle can be calculated. The newer Garmans like the Nuvi do not. This allows one to go into the sea make a rout and find your way back or to use waypoints to buoy's or other points of destination. With these two functions one could sail to almost any place on the globe. it also gives current latitude and longitude make the handheld truly a navigation help for sailor of hiker. Because it tracks distance between points one can route a trip on the cycle. It will tell you how fast one is going, how far one has gone, ave speed one has been going. It does much more. For the sportsman this remains a great machine. It must be noted to have street level maps the Mapsource Metroguide is a necessity, To use this a Garman Date Chip will need to be acquired and to use maps and Data Chips it is almost necessary to have USB chip programmer. The unit comes with a USB cable and one can program the chip while in the GPS but it takes a long time. So when buying a Garman eMAP factor the cost of these into the final purchase price. It still is a bargain if you have a need for these extra navigational features.Read full review
I have three of these things. I got my first one used about ten years ago. They're cheap so I just buy them on eBay & throw one in each car's glove box. I think they were made mostly in the 90s. They have a lot of information on them, comparable to most of the modern day ones, but you have to change screens to access a lot of it. They come with a base map that shows most all of the major roads in the US like interstates, fedral and state highways, cities and most of the small towns, but not the streets, county roads or farm-to-market paved roads. Some people might not like the eMap because you need to load what ever area of the US on to a data card in it to get the smaller roads, streets, etc. Most of them came out with an 8 meg. card that has enough room to load less than half a state. You can get bigger cards on eBay but they can be pricey. To load detailed mapping to the card you will need Garmin's 'Mapsource Metro Guide', which is a two CD set, you will need the cable to connect the eMap to a computer, and a computer with an old type serial connection. I got a cable with a USB connector but I've not been able to get it to work yet. Or you can use the eMap with just the base map. I also use one in my small airplane. It gives me an accurate moving map location, speed, altitude (I found out my altimeter is off by about 8%), I can use the 'go to' function and it will take me right to where ever I'm going along with an ETA, it also leaves a bread crum trail that shows where I've been. Sure beats dead reconing. Nice size screen for the ventage. Gray scale. 2 AA batteries go 8 to 10 hours. Use rechargable AAs but carry a couple of Duracells just in case.Read full review
This is my second emap. It is great for geo-caching, seeing the "big picture" and great for across the non road land and water with the proper mapping downloaded. This does things and has features that the new auto/road gps units cannot. I actually use both together - the emap to get the big picture and a regular modern Tomtom to tell me street by street how to get there. I also use the emap on my boat with the recreation mapping downloaded and it works fine - not fancy - just fine (had bailed me out of the fog more than once). The connector for power and data cord is the emap's weak point - it eventually breaks (plastic gets brittle and won't hold the cord anymore).

As an older guy with eye issues, i find the Garmin E-Map screen easy to view and easy to load up the mapsource cd-rom. I'm a low tech person and related to this GPS very well. I also like the Sun/Moon feature too. As far as the weather proof complaints in earlier reviews just get a cell phone waterproof pouch that you can operate the E-Map thru the clear plastic. Yes, i would buy again sinse they are cheaper now, but get a bigger memory card, holds up to 128mb.
