This set contains all three final seasons (five through seven) of the acclaimed British mystery/crime series RUMPOLE OF THE BAILEY. Based on the bestselling books by Sir John Mortimer, the series is a courtroom drama in which comedy plays as large a role as the actual law; Mortimer's crisp, clever writing creating the kind of juicy roles actors can really sink their teeth into. While the tubby barrister Horace Rumpole (Leo McKern) can be painfully stubborn, he is ultimately out for the greater good, and never gives up until justice has been found.
Delightful comedy, drama and inadvertent social history.
This is an outstandingly witty series mixing comedy and drama. A few anachronisms of the 1980s need to be taken in stride, such as Rumpole's constant cigar smoking in public and at home, and some awkward moments in the status of female characters, despite the author's evident nods to liberality.
Watched on PBS a long time ago. Wanted to see again. Hasn't lost a thing over the years. Funny as hell as far as I'm concerned. Top notch comedy satire about British judicial system. Could apply to any judicial system. Universal. Proves you can funny & poignant at the same time. I like main characters who stick their neck out and are willing to stand alone if they have to.
If you love Rumpole, you just have to have the complete series. The price was very reasonable and the quality good. I did have some trouble playing the 3rd disc on my machine but after the third try it worked just fine, so I must have not placed it carefully in the machine. I particularly enjoy the introductions to each episode by the author John Mortimer.
I bought this DVD set as a gift for my brother. I don't personally care for television programs that are produced in the United Kingdom and I'm not a fan of detective shows. My brother likes this stuff and that's why he now has it.
