The Death and Return of Superman is a video game version of two incredibly popular DC comic book series, "The Death of Superman" and "The Reign of the Supermen."
Doomsday, the most powerful foe Superman has ever faced, is trashing Metropolis. As Superman, you must fight your way through a legion of enemies to find him and engage in battle. Doomsday is tough, but so is our hero. Superman can jump, fly, and punch, and he can throw his enemies left, right, and into the background. He also has heat vision and is capable of throwing an earthquake punch, which levels all enemies on the screen.
If Superman loses the battle with Doomsday, the game is over. If Superman puts up a good fight, both he and Doomsday die from a pair of simultaneous punches, but the game continues with you going on to play other characters. The levels following the big battle introduce four new Supermen (Superboy, The Man of Steel, The Cyborg, and The Eradicator), each of them claiming to be the real Superman. Each of these new characters has his own special abilities and powers.
Are any one of these mysterious new Supermen the real Superman? Are Superman and Doomsday really dead? Play this game, which is virtually identical to its Sega Genesis counterpart, to find out.

Superman has had some of the worse treatment as a character when it comes to video games. Except for this one. This is one of the few exceptions to the rule with its fun gameplay and enjoyable storyline. It is basically a beat em up where you not only get to play as superman, but as Superboy, Eradicator, Steel, and Cyborg Superman. What would make this game better would be if you could play as Green Lantern. Hopefully, those of you reading this are familiar with Death and Return of Superman story arc otherwise you will be lost.
An overlooked classic, now nostalgia to any comic fan!
If you're like me, you were into comics back in the 90's. This era brought marvelous stories and sagas, from the story of Bane & Azrael in Batman to the X-Men parallel universe saga, there was none more memorable than the Death & Return of Superman! I don't remember there being a more exciting time in all my years of comic interest than this saga. Now, with a game that I never knew existed until this year (2006), you can relive the story with Superman and all of the "Supermen" that claimed to take his place after his "death". I don't want to spoil the game, but if you're interested in this game, you probably know the jist of the story.
The game moves along rather quickly. The Death & Return of Superman plays a lot like Final Fight and Streets of Rage (a typical brawler genre popular on 16-bit systems), where gameplay is pretty linear and straightforward. I was surprised at how fun the game was when I started playing it! Overall, any brawler type game can get boring after a while, but with all the different Supermen that you play as, there is enough variety to keep you interested! At one point early in the game, you play as the Cyborg Superman in what can only be described as a Gradius/R-Type-style stage. When you get back to regular gameplay, your character has new and improved moves! I don't want to give away too much of the game, but this one is surprisingly entertaining!
Overall, if you want to relive the saga of perhaps the most memorable comic book event from the 1990's, this is the game to play! With the movie 'Superman Returns' that was released earlier this year, and the continued Smallville series, gamers and comic book fans have sparked their interest in the Superman franchise. That, along with the scarce availability of this game, has made this is game very hard to find! Grab one if you have the chance!Read full review
