TROY was an interesting movie, and I'll probably buy the DVD when it comes out, but it won't be a repeat view at the movies for me. The first hour is so campy it's comparable to an episode of the old 60's BATMAN TV show, but the last 45 minutes or so saves the entire movie. As a wrestling fan, I have to say that Brad Pitt does a great imitation of Raven, in his "everything is about me" attitude. Truthfully, ANYONE else would have been better in this role..including Raven himself, probably. Pitt is just SO over the top it's scary...and it marrs what otherwise would have been a great character. I didn't find myself liking the character at all, even for what it was...I found myself wishing his scenes would end ASAP. The movie's true stars in my own opinion is Peter O'Toole, who should pull out an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor; and Eric Bana, who isn't one of my favorite actors, is fantastic as Hector. Orlando Bloom, who I usually like, is thrust in many scenes into a cowardly version of Legolas and sometimes his scenes are truly laughable. Garrett Hedland, playing Patroclus, is the discovery of the movie...he often steals the scenes he's part of in such a way that he doesn't come across as over the top, but subtle...you have to be, since most of his scenes are with Pitt. All in all it was an enjoyable almost three hours...but too much overacting will keep it from being the dynamically remembered epic that most of the critics out there are claiming it to be..Read full review
Although not entirely faithful to the Iliad (the movie notes "inspired by"), Brad Pitt is the definitive star and shines in his portrayal of Achilles. His fans will find everything to like: plenty of closeups on his pretty face showing grim determination, suppressed sadness, hollow-eyed surprise, etc., plenty of skin showing his buff body, plenty of action highlighting his graceful run, spear-throwing arm, etc. Stalwarts like Brian Cox, Peter O'Toole and Sean Bean give solid performances as well. There's nothing better than respected English actors to lend weight to a sword-and-sandal epic. Eric Bana is the only "newcomer" with any grit, however. The rest of the younger set (Orlando Bloom, Diane Kruger, Saffron Burrows) is pale and limited in range in comparison to the seasoned actors. Their scenes together slows the action considerably. Filmed in Malta and Mexico, the setting is panoramic and majestic, worthy of Cecil B. DeMille. All in all a satisfying movie for those willing to enjoy a good epic without too many requirements of literal translation to the screen.Read full review
This is a good pic that is probably the best representation of the Trojan War on film outside of some classic that is out of date and in black and white. This movie is star-studded and full of action. It does tend to drag on a little bit in some places but eventuallys picks up in large battle scenes. The DVD comes with an extra bonus disc that is full of extra footage and bonus material. Brad Pitt and Eric Bana lead this cast of all stars! Check it Out!
I am an avid Brad Pitt fan;but the reason I bought the film was that Pitt won a fair number of awards for the film. The film to me was interesting and exciting as well. Pitt played the role of a top warrior; a man not to be taken lightly on the battle-field. At the same time one could see that he was basically a good person who was tired of war and wanted a normal life. Finally, yes there is the famous/infamous Trojan Horse in the film which has warriors hidden inside. I recommend the film to anyone who likes action-packed sword fights and blood; but also the story-line. I liked it.
When you first look at the title of this movie "Troy" you start imagining good Greek battles, the beautiful Helen of Troy, the wooden horse, and of course, the burn of the city of Troy. This and more you will get! This is exactly what this movie is about: Telling the mythic heroic story of Homer's Iliad in 162 minutes with a loving touch and the wrath of Achilles. For those of you who love the fighting scenes, myself included, this movie will wake up the warrior spirit in your soul. I felt I could not wait to see in action, facing each other, the two Titans of this war, Achilles vs. Hector. Now, for those of you who love love themes in a movie, this movie will give you a warm feeling for the highest love above all, sacrificing everything in the name of love. Did you think you know love? Think back again. From the mythological perspective, the movie doesn't show quite much as in the original story. The Gods are not shown during the whole movie, only Thetis, but they do get involve before the war and in the war. Despite your interest, "Troy" will sure give you an introduction to the mythical world, a history lesson, or just simply an entertaining time. "Let them know I walked with Titans; Let them know I lived in the time of Hector; Let them know I lived in the time of Achilles." - Odysseus.Read full review

With soaring photography that circles from above then swoops in for the action, TROY is Wolfgang Petersen's majestic presentation of the classic Greek legend. It tells the story of an epic battle over Helen (Diane Kruger), the queen of Sparta, who is kidnapped by her lover Paris (Orlando Bloom), the prince of Troy. This infuriates Helen's husband Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson), whose brother Agamemnon (Brian Cox) convinces him to invade Troy. They recruit Achilles (Brad Pitt), the best warrior in Greece, whose bravery, quick feet, and remarkable swordsmanship (not to mention tanned biceps, short kilts, and blond locks) have earned him a reputation that is almost as impressive as his ego. Achilles agrees to fight for Sparta, if only for the fame it will bring him. Even Achilles's mother, in a touching scene, advises him to forget mortal achievements and become a hero who will be remembered throughout history. Along with the invasion of Troy, a series of duels must also be fought: Paris, who is heartbreaking in his lovestruck naiveté, must go up against the enraged Menelaus, and Achilles must settle a score with Hector (Eric Bana), who is fiercely dedicated to protecting his brother Paris and their father, the frail king Priam (Peter O'Toole). When the war finally ignites in its massive proportions, the action is awesome. And as the increasingly dramatic events play out, TROY earns its own timeless reputation among other action-adventure epics such as GLADIATOR and SPARTACUS. I absolutely love this movie. I was lucky enough to be able to see this when it was in theaters, and it was amazing on a large screen. I have since then also purchased the movie for my collection, it's just a must have. This movie is about the classic Greek legend of Achilles. It tells the story of the fight between the Trojans and Spartans that starts over just one woman, Helen the Queen of Sparta. Paris, one of the princes of Troy, takes Helen along with him back to Troy. This infuriates King Menelaus, and his brother Agamemnon convinces him to go to war with Troy and kill Helen. They recruite Achilles, who is the best warrior in Greece. Achilles agrees because he wants the fame that will come out of it, he wants to be known throughout history as a hero. There are a few duals, as well as some bloody fights in this war. There is a fight for love between Paris and Menelaus. There is also a fight between Hector and Achilles. The action in this movie is incredibly done. Very impressive. The cast is amazing as well, it includes: Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, Brad Pitt, Sean Bean, Peter O'Toole, and Brendan Gleeson.Read full review
