From deep within Mordroc's Castle, a foul stench rose up to mix with the cold, damp midnight air the telltale sign of the evil wizard's pet fire-breathing dragon, Singe. The reeking breath of the beast that guarded the Princess Daphne in the dark and deadly caes far below the surface. Dirk the Daring walked steadily towards the castle gates. He felt no fear. Fear was for cowards, not the most courageous knight in the land. No other would dare enter this perilous castle where Mordroc has imprisoned the helpless princess. But then, no other could match Dirk's unrelenting love for the beautiful Princess Daphne. There was no other possible course of action. Now was the time to enter the Dragon's Lair! This NES version of the classic LaserDisc title converts the major set-pieces of the arcade title into side-scrolling action sequences. Playable with up to two players (alternating for points).
To say that Dragon's Lair for the NES is terrible may be accurate, but it's not exactly fair. In truth NONE of the home versions released for this game have merited the praise the original arcade classic deserves. Even the more recent, DVD versions (which at least are, more or less, graphically identical) are still subpar because they do not randomize the different levels like the original did and they do not repeat levels in an attempt to add difficulty to the game and also check the player's memory. Nevertheless, the NES Dragon's Lair is probably the worst of all of them as it isn't even the same game - and the game that it is, is lousy. Graphically, it's better than average (for the NES) and one can tell that the licensee at least attempted to make it look good, but the gameplay is so bad it doesn't matter: the controls are ridiculously non-intuitive, slow and frustrating. You will die several times, guaranteed before you even pass the first screen (which was edited out of most arcade versions of the original game). I can't say much about the game as it progresses because I haven't played it much. Suffice it to say, the ONLY reason to own this game (and the one reason I do own it), is if you have such fond memories of the original that you must have any version of the game, no matter how terrible. If this doesn't describe your interest level in Dragon's Lair, then don't bother with this terrible, ahem, "port".Read full review
Well, I decided to buy this game after I saw a review about it. The game itself is kind of fun, but it's probably one of the worst games I've ever played in my life. The controls are very delayed, and the A-B buttons are switched, where B jumps and A throws your weapon in this game, while, traditionally, A jumps and B attacks. Even after having this game for just one night, I wish I had the nine dollars and ninety-eight cents that I bought this game with...
This game is legendary Hard. It has the worst lag/delayed contros I have ever seen in a NES game. Not only that but Everything kills you in one hit except the bats. It is a game of trial and error and you will die so many times. Stay away!
