A really good album. I think this is the best Tori Amos album - just really good music and lyrics which explore difficult topics. Each song is also very varied in its composition making the album a really good musical experience. It’s also a well recorded and dynamic album which benefits from playing on good quality audio systems

key tracks.. crucify silent all these years china winter it seems like a lifetime ago that tori amos was being hailed as the new kate bush, and looking back you wonder why she ever was. this album tells a story...the 12 songs packing in tori's life into 12 vignetes. for once the 4 singles on here..(crucify, silent all these years, winter and china) were the right tracks released from an album. all are stunningly frank, honest and beautiful songs. she is one of the most remarkable female songwriters of all time, and although you wont always understand the meaning to all the lyrics...you can feel what shes trying to say. like all great singers, these songs will have different meaning to different people..and thats the beauty of it. tori isnt afraid to face her demons either. the penultimate track 'me and gun' sees tori sing acapella, about being attacked. instead of being self obsessed, she tackles the song with fire and grit, and almost an acceptance of "this is what happened, this is how i feel, move on" which makes the song all the more heartbreaking. a fantastic debut album from a fantastic singer. if you are are looking to buy your first tori album, then this is the place to start!!!Read full review
I had a copy of this album back in about 92/3 when i was very much younger and Tori Amos was just surfacing more on the music scene, i loved the album back then, some very different adapts on music and vocals, and her unmistakable voice that once you here a song i doubt you would ever forget it was her!! My favourite songs for me are china, and Winter (which is just simply beautiful in my opinion) although to be honest i like them all. I like to sing myself so having songs like this to stretch your vocal chords too are great, just makes you realise how rubbish all the newer artists and singers really are!!
A classic album with some fantastic tracks. A bargain at this price. Some of the songs are very personal (and one is downright disturbing) but it is still one of the best albums from the 90s.
the album is tori at her best, if you have only heard bits and pieces of tori amos work and are looking for an album to buy this is the one.i evey good starting point for anyone wanting to hear more from tori amos.a musical prodigy at an early age, amos poetic and sometimes haunting music can only make her ahead of her time.an esential album for anyone who is serious about there music.
This album is timeless... despite hitting the markets in the early nineties, Tori's first album is as fresh and revolutionary today as it was the first day that it entered our collective musical consciousness. The songs address topics that musicians were only beginning to talk about in not-so-shaded terms and she does so with both emotion and exquisite musicality. Her control of her voice, her emotional output and her story-telling is second to none. Every word, every note carries meaning, depth and soul. Tori is, and has always been, a sensual musical experience - not always for the faint-hearted or those people who simply want catchy pop tunes - but always for those interested in the concept of music as female empowerment, people who are capable of using their brains and their hearts at the same time as their ears.Read full review
