Anthony Hopkins gives a magnific...ent performance as the complex, troubled Richard Nixon in an Oliver Stone film that is essentially faithful to documented sources. The choice of sources, however, is ungenerous. The unappealing character traits of the President are amply displayed in a selective biography that takes the viewer to the climax of the Watergate drama. Absent are references to any of Nixon's considerable achievements. As a result, the film, while raw and compelling, lacks historical perspective. Brilliant supporting performances from the "Palace Guard" surrounding the President (Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Kissinger, Haig, Mitchell and Dean) contribute to the apparent authenticity of the film. Over them all towers the dark, unpredictable, vengeful figure of Richard Nixon. As the President's troubles threaten the Presidency and the constitutional crisis paralyses executive government, Hopkins is frighteningly convincing as a powerless occupant of the White House. The sole criticism of the film is that, if it were less biased, it would ultimately be more convincing. But that is the stuff of history books, not of Hollywood.
In our opinion, this movie has always gotte...n a bad rap. For one thing, pro-NIxon people claim it shows him in a bad light - but if you see one of the documentaries about Nixon, you'll ;quickly see that Stone was amazingly nice about him. We thought it was extremely well written and filmed and the acting was superb. We also decided to look on it as a Shakespearian tragedy - which is what it is - an epic tragedy of a man who got everything he ever wanted and couldn't resist destroying it because of his inner demons. If Shakespeare were alive and writing, this is exactly the thing he would be doing - huge films about huge subjects. The quote at the beginning: What does it profiteth a man to win the world and lose his immortal soul? Truly describes the meat of this movie. Whether you like Nixon the man, or hate him, this movie is thought provoking about men and souls and what life is about.
We enjoyed this movie...but came away from it w...ondering how much of this was fictionalized. Does Oliver Stone take too many liberties with the truth in his movies? Was Nixon really as paranoid as portrayed...IS our government really as corrupt?? Anthony Hopkins and the actor who play Kissinger were SUPERB! I often forgot they were actors. Movie is long and my husband thought it became tredious in places; it held my interest from beginning to end.
Oliver Stone's best ever movie. Always a timely ...watch.
