SynopsisExcerpt from Memoirs of the Life and Writings of John Pye Smith, D.D., LL. D: Late Theological Tutor of the Old College, Homerton Upon the death of Dr. Pye Smith in the early part of 1851, it was justly expected among his friends, and was soon made known in the proper quarter, that an account of his Life would be prepared for publication. - In stating briefly some of the causes of the delay which has arisen, the Reader will perhaps be better prepared for the narrative which is to follow. Towards the middle of the year in which Dr. Smith died, his family were pleased to communicate to me their desire that I should undertake the Work which had been announced. An answer could not, however, be given at once; that is, not in the affirmative: - for, besides the totally unexpected nature of the application, and my want of experience or practice in writing for the Press, it seemed important to ascertain by actual inspection, the number and quality of the materials which might be available in carrying out the design. When this had been somewhat carefully done, the resolution was formed to attempt the duty; - the fears that were felt being in a measure obviated, by the great kindness which accompanied the proposal, and by a scarcely less than filial veneration for a beloved Tutor and Friend. Although - as I venture to hope - diligence was not wanting, the process of arranging, collating, and using the materials placed in my hands, has been far from rapid. D: Late Theological Tutor of the Old College, Homerton I desire to offer my most sincere thanks to very many of Dr. Smith's Correspondents and Friends, whose various contributions have served to render the Narrative what it is. The use which has been made of their Letters and suggestions, will show them respectively the high value which has been set upon their kindness.
