  • Good image quality, usable zoom range; needs zoom lock

This 100-400 mm is a better solution, for me, than an 80 - 200 (200 not enough) or the 200-600 (200 so tight!). With 100 mm, you can take a picture of a subject in front of you, it's wide enough to still see a whole face and chest -- and the 400 is a good magnification! I'm impressed at the image quality. I've shot birds mostly during the two weeks I have owned the lens, and even a bird that seems a spec can be enlarge with good image quality. Finally got a "classic" full moon shot that was clear, never achieved that with other lenses. Like many have said, there is no lens lock so the zoom gradually releases and extends the lens as you walk along. That's unfortunate.

  • Fabulous lend

Everyone who writes that this lens is great but expensive, well you get what you pay for here! Those who can afford a high end camera should ALWAYS use an appropriate lens to go with it! This is such a lens! Best camera with best lens equals best pictures!! It’s that simple!

  • Pricey but great IQ

As per all the reviews, great IQ, very sharp and focuses at a relatively close distance. With my A7R3 I can crop in ridiculous amounts and still have a nice image. It's not small, but it does fit into my bag, taking the place of a FE 70-300. It is a significant upgrade from that lens. The 70-300 produced a sharp image in crop sensor mode, and was significantly smaller. This lens is sharp across the image at all apertures and focuses on moving birds/animals more quickly. It's a keeper for me! The pics are from my first outing with the lens.

  • Lightweight and super sharp

Having used this lens exclusively for the past few weeks on my Sony A9 for sports and horse activities I can honestly say the lens is far superior in IQ to my Canon 1DX + EF 100-400L mk2 with the exception of the focus ring. The focus ring has a dampener or governor that is adjustable. Even at its smoothest rotation it still is a bit tight for my use with fast moving sports allowing me to zoom in and out quickly while on a gimbal and monopod. That would be my only negative review to date. The lens does protrude quite a bit at full zoom which offsets the weight when on a gimbal head. Still not a big problem but just so you can make an informed decision. Expensive? Yes, but worth it IMO. Lastly, the Sony A9 with this lens combo is the best I've used for tracking and locking on accurately for capturing sports action shots. Needless to say, I am so pleased with this lens and would highly recommend it to anyone needing a tack sharp zoom for any Sony model camera.

  • The Winner

I struggled between this lens and the Sony 200-600. I used both and still had a hard time. Finally I chose the 100-400 simply because I got a good deal on it. Both lenses would perform for my tasks at hand, so either is a winner in my book.

  • Great lens but heavy and expensive

Yes it's a good lens but I don't think it should cost as much as it does. It's a nice sharp lens that is well built, but that makes it big and heavy as well. I balk at carrying it vs. my 70-350 sometimes even though I payed an arm and a leg for the 100-400 and it's a great sharp lens.

  • Hiking Photographers dream

Would recommend for anyone who is into backpacking and animal photography. Light, reliable. The only complaint I have is when I hike the lens extends to 400mm even with the ring set to "tight" not a huge deal, its worth it. Just be aware that you have an extra few inches at your side.

  • Sony 100-400 GM

This lens is sharp and lightweight but the price is way overpriced compare to Tamron and Sigma.
