I searched long and hard for the right 4-slice toaster so I could sit down to breakfast with my husband. It seemed ridiculous to spend so much money on a TOASTER, but I'm glad I did. It does everything as described. One thing that I only found once in a review was regarding the external heat of the unit. I had a "cool touch" toaster on a plastic body before, and was concerned that I wouldnt be able to put this steel one away after use because of the outside of it being hot. No worries!!! Its warm enough to know that it was recent used, but not hot at all! I'm so relieved and think they should have mentioned that feature somewhere. Its an important selling point Also, my large kitchen appliances are "brushed" stainless, so no fingerprints (NOT), but the finish on the breville 830XL REALLY cant get marred up. It's beautiful. With all of its features, it's fun to operate. It's just a very poor toaster! I returned the first toaster. The top half of the slice was burned and the bottom half was untoasted. The replacement isn't much better, so it will probably go back, too. My $9.99 toaster from the drug store works just as well.

I've had this toaster for a while now, and I really like it. It toasts evenly and accepts a wide variety of bread, bagels and buns. The long openings allow long slices from round loaves to be toasted in one piece. The Bagel setting works well, heating the center elements higher than the outside elements so the cut side of a bagel gets toasted while the outside remains soft and just gets warm. The Bagel setting also works well with hamburger buns, Brioches and similar items to toast the cut side while just warming the outside. When using the toaster to heat buns, the heat needs to be turned down much lower than when doing bagels. The cleaning tray is very easy to remove, dump the accumulated crumbs and return it to its place under the toaster. The lift and look function is handy. The little bit more setting works nicely when a slice of toast is just about right but needs just a bit more to be at its best for one's individual taste. I just hope this toaster lasts as long as the old Toastmaster that sat on my mother's kitchen counter for over 20 years putting out 2 to 6 slices of toast every morning of the week.Read full review
