I cut the top off a 55 gallon plastic barrel to use to flush my outboard motor that is used in saltwater. I bought this spigot to drain the fresh water from the barrel when I was finished. It is threaded to accept a 5/8" garden hose and I run two old hoses down from the barrel to a low spot in my woods. The spigot can be mounted sideways to make it easier to attach a garden hose. It drains at a good speed while I'm cleaning up the rest of the boat.

Looked far and wide for this exact item in local stores but all they had were plastic kits that were waaaay overpriced... thanks to the good ol inirnet i was able to find a cheap brass valve made to be put in my watering system, just make sure if you install it on a barrel that you find the smoothest surface available to drill your hole.

Much better quality than my original one on the rain barrel. Fits perfectly. The only complaint is that it is low flow as I’m sure they all are these days. Why would we want a low flow valve on a water barrel?

Valve works great, no leakage around gasket. Installation on a 55 gallon barrel is tricky. Try soldering a copper wire onto the valve nut. Put the valve threads thru the hole, have a partner fish the nut / wire over the valve threads, tighten the valve & you're set.
