I found this to be on the dull side. The amusing parts are few and far between. There are some. Just not enough. I understand this to be Rob Riener's first foray into full length feature film directing. If so, I'm surprised he made any more films. I suppose it has some value as having a "cult" following. I read where someone is thinking of making a sequel. It wouldn't have to go very far to be better.

Spinal Tap, an aging rock band has its ups and downs. Guitars malfunction, the bread backstage is "miniature" when they want it to be "large",and the "Stonehenge monument was in danger of being crushed--by a dwarf". Of course, they also have some good things happen to them. Filmmaker Marty Dibergi seems to catch Spinal Tap at interesting moments. And, through the course of the movie, we are introduced to Nigel Tufnel, lead guitar; David St. Hubbins, lead guitarist; and Derek Smalls, bass. We meet Mick Shrimpton, one of Tap's MANY drummers, and we see Viv Savage, the keyboardest, though we never hear a word from him until the end credits. Jeanine Pettibone, Dave's girlfriend becomes a small issume with Ian Faith, the band's manager, and Nigel throughout. Spinal Tap realises that as they get older, they become less popular, and some people don't find them the big bad rockers that they used to. Through apperent references to The Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin, KISS, and so many other classic rock bands, you see the rocker life through the eyes of "one of England's loudest rock bands". Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer play the three lead band members, and in fact also wrote and performed the Tap numbers. So, if you're a fan of rock, or have ever been in a rock band, you are sure to find this movie hilarious.Read full review
This is not a monumental achivement, so I didn't give it a 5, but it is good entertainment. The deadpan satire is usually quite believable as a documentary, save the occasional exploding drummer. The understated absurdity and much of the ad libbed dialog makes it seem more live/real than acted, far better than the ostensible "reality" shows polluting today's TV. Even the naughtiness is rather subtle; the song lyrics are suggestive rather than overt. This is the most benign R-rated movie I've seen, the only R-ratable aspect is the sometimes salty dalog that your kids learn from other kids at school. This is fine for most high-schoolers, just add your own bleeps.
This is Spinal Tap will go down in history as one of the greatest comedies ever made, but buyers should know not all This is Spinal Tap DVDs are the same. The most common Tap DVD is the Special Edition, while the Criterion Edition is not as common and significantly more expensive. Both have features and extras not present in the other, so both are required for any serious fan. Perhaps the biggest difference is the commentary tracks. The Special Edition DVD has commentary by the band members in character, while the Criterion Edition has band commentary out of character, as well as additional commentary by Rob Reiner, which is not present on the Special Edition DVD. The question then becomes, how big a fan of this movie are you? Many might be content with the Special Edition DVD, which is excellent, but the hardcore fan will want the Criterion Edition as well. This movie is equal parts comedy and all-together-too-real documentary for anyone who has ever played in a band. The humor is subtle, dry, and laugh-out-loud funny all at once. This film set the standard for all the mockumentaries to come and it is still the best of the lot.

A fantastic movie a genre known as MOCKUMENTARY when you watch this movie it feel like if you are watching VH1 behind the music parody. Great actors whom normally are supporting actors y major motion pictures but here because most are also writers have main parts and you get to see how good they are Christopher Guest who directed and performed in Waiting for Gulfman, Best in Show, For your Consideration, Mighty Winds you can see his amazing versatility here he play a British lead guitarist form a 1980s rock band. Great movie highly recommendable
A classic! It's hilarious; and to those of us who have worked in the musick business, even at the local level as I have, it is really good.

Classic mockumentary, rock stars, spandex, drugs, cucumber in the pants, series of drummers from deaths, crazy girlfriend breaking up the band, mismanagement by the tour manager, record company censoring the band's ideas. Killer songs, and guitars. Can wtch it over and over, memorable quotable lines, gets funnier every time I see it, hence buying the Special Edition DVD.

I wish this DVD didn't have French sub-titles/captioning. That wasn't part of the description and really ruined the viewing experience.
