"Back to the Future: Back in Time" is an excellent cooperative tabletop game based on the first "Back to the Future" movie. The premise: you're stuck in 1955 and must get George and Lorraine to fall in love AND prepare the DeLorean for time travel by 10:04 pm...before you fade from existence or get stuck in the past forever. You get Opportunity cards, tiles, and items to aid you, while Trouble cards hinder you, and the main mechanic is dice rolling. You play on a map of Hill Valley, which is divided into squares you freely move between. Players must work together and will win or lose as a team. Each character--Marty, Doc, Jennifer, and Einstein--has a different ability that affects gameplay. While there is a luck element in which cards come up and how your dice roll, there is a fair amount of strategy required, with how you move your characters, use items, and attempt challenges. Biff and his gang are out to thwart you at every turn, and with them and your two objectives, the first half of the game can feel overwhelming. But luck can turn around, and you can find yourself winning after a dismal first half...or losing after a rousing start. There are a lot of pieces to this game, and it can seem confusing at first with all the rules and intricacies, but I find that it keeps the game fresh after dozens of plays, as you never know which tiles, items, or problems you're going to get, how the NPCs will move, how the dice will roll, or how your strategizing will pay off. No knowledge of "Back to the Future" is necessary to enjoy this game. Fans will recognize the movie scenes and items depicted on the cards. Although the box says the game is suitable for 2-4 players, I have only played solo, controlling 2-4 characters, and have a blast, so it is fun for solitaire play. Highly recommended.Read full review
