I use the chromecast to stream internet radios. It's best used along with mobile apps. I use TuneIn radio to trigger playback and GoogleCast app to stop casting and/or to change the volume. The GoogleCast app takes pretty long to load even though it does almost nothing. Apart from showing a list of devices (plus basic control) it shows also list of chromecast enabled apps. That would be useful if I could actually install those apps - majority of them are only for US app store, so it points me only to an error message. I actually wanted to use it even to send wirelessly sound from my MacBook to my remote speakers, but that's not possible. There is no official support for such feature, so I tried some open source projects. It didn't even start, so I abandoned this and still using Bluetooth to transfer the sound itself. The only way to transfer sound from MacBook is via Google Chrome, which I'm not using anyway. I've also struggled a bit to setup the device as it works only in Chrome, no other browsers are supported. So the device does it job in playing online music very well, but it's not capable doing anything else.Read full review

This product is deeply flawed. Set up did not match booklet (there were no "prompts" I had to guess every step) The volume only works 1 out of 3 times. Sometimes there is zero ability to control volume Sometimes the volume , when maxed, is too quite to hear (I have to do a hard reset 1-3x on the same media source to get to hearing the media I want, sometimes this takes an HOUR of resets) Nothing I do can get Hulu to stream on chromecast. "Enabling" streaming services is a lie, I have to download the separate app and sign in independent of google, so the only reason google put that step in was to track you and use your data, not to help you watch a service. An absolutely terrible experience, overall.

What I miss the most is support for H.265 (HEVC) that becomes more and more the new standard de-facto and even more, as non native English speaker, it would be great if we were less depended on external Chrome store apps like VideoStream to stream content with subtitles (like some DLNA servers have). Last, the power cable should be transferred in the future to wireless power or HDMI+USB type C that can be used as a power suppliant via the TV own power. Other than that, does the work pretty well, including its Android mirroring feature.

My second Chromecast device. The first one fails intermittently after approx 9 mos of continuously being powered. (I am not leaving my new one plugged into power unless in use) I do like the product but am somewhat disappointed at the video casting disconnects (from the phone app) every now and again. It is still not a solid capability fore some reason. Much better availability of direct casting from external Inet based services. I still like it but believe it could be better. Maybe next model issue. Does it perform well is actually "Fair" vs the hard yes/no choice above.

I am so glad that I bought this product for myself. I was trying to stop using cables to hook up my laptop to my hd television. This product pretty much eliminated me having to do the connecting of a bunch of cables. 1) The device was easy to setup. 2) I have a lot of viewing choices like: Netflix, Musixmatch, Gaia TV, You Tube, etc, thus I never get bored. 3) I am able to use one chromecast device on any hd tv in my home. A few months ago I even took it over my daughter's home and was able to use it as entertainment for her three kids by looking and dancing to youtube videos. Again, it set up within minutes. 4) The quality of this unit is really good. It is not flimsy. 5) Finally, I actually ended up buying two more chromecast/google cast devices. One for my fiancee' and pne for my youngest daughter. I love the screen savers, and now the unit allows me to even use own pictures. Thanks again.Read full review

All in all - great value for money. Casting online content is great, quality and ease of use are flawless. Casting your own device's screen, e.g. laptop, is less brilliant. As a streamer it's not amazing, just OK. But for $35 it's a great and cheap way to make any screen a smart TV...
