This genuine Ford Motorcraft part works great! The tailgate drops very slowly like my F150 did. I installed it in about 15 minutes by myself. I did not have to fully remove the tailgate; I just lifted the right side off and set it on the bumper with a folded towel to prevent scratching, and then removed the right cable so that it could slide away from the truck enough to allow easy removal and replacement of the pivot. I screwed the stud in backwards (from the inside out) to "clean up" the threads first since there is more room to work on the inside than the outside. Light removal is easy, just be careful with the front two pins that snap into place (out to the side not back); the back two screws are easy.

My VERY expensive Super Duty came with a non-damped tailgate. It dropped like a sack of ****. After a few minutes work (literally) I now have a 2017 tailgate which drops slowly and softly. If only Ford-Lincoln of Cookeville TN had heard of this part! If you want it to match your paint scheme, because it comes in black, you'll need to either paint it yourself or take it to a body shop. Fits on the right hand side by replacing the hinge and installing the shock absorber below the hinge. To install the threaded ball, the location is very tight so hold the shank just below the ball with needle nose and turn the flats with a open end wrench or ratcheting wrench. Very tight but very doable. There is an excellent YouTube video describing the whole process.

This was an easy 30 minute install with simple hand tools. The only tool I did not have was a T50 bit. Otherwise the install was simple. You don't have to remove the tailgate, just take it out of the left and right sockets and lay it on a moving blanket. There are several YouTube videos detailing the installation.

A must have on your Super Duty. Simple function and easy to install. BTW, I didn't totally remove my tailgate. Instead, I carefully rested it on a blanket halfway into my bed...a bit more than halfway. There's extra cable that will come out of the hole to accommodate this, just remember to feed it back into the hole when done. I did need a little help guiding the tailgate back onto the left hinge since I was holding the tailgate by myself from the middle and couldn't see the left hinge.

Five minutes of labor and and now a lifetime of ease. My 2019 Super Duty Lariat did not have the tailgate damper option. It literally took five minutes to install. I didn't completely remove my tailgate. I only undid the side where the damper bolts and laid the corner of my tailgate on top of a soft wash mitt on the bumper while I removed and replace the new hinge . Bolted up, added the shock and reattached the tailgate. This should be a factory feature on EVERY truck sold ! Love it!
