How peace dollars are graded

Experts grade a peace silver dollar on the Sheldon scale. This scale goes from 0 to 70, with 70 being an uncirculated mint coin with no blemishes. The scale is subjective, but most experts can agree within a range of numbers. These ranges include:

  • Poor: These peace dollars are considered almost unrecognizable and generally are not collectible.
  • Good: About good, good, and very good coins have wear, and the rims may be flat, but you can easily see the main details.
  • Fine: Fine, very fine, and choice very fine coins have heavy, even wear, but all the details are present.
  • Extremely Fine: Extremely fine and choice extremely fine coins show almost no wear. There may be some luster still present.
  • About Uncirculated: About uncirculated and choice uncirculated coins must have sharp details. Additionally, mint luster must be present.
Were any peace dollars made with errors?

Yes, there were several peace dollars made with errors including the following:

  • 1922 Peace Dollar: Designers were not ready when Congress ordered them to replace the Morgan dollar with the peace dollar. In an attempt to follow orders, they used altered dies that they created from the Morgan dollars. The altered dies created coins with high relief. These coins will show areas where the coin is very thin and lacking details.
  • 1922 Peace Dollar: Another error that you might find on rare peace dollars is a double-struck flipped-over coin. These coins occurred when the collar did not properly hold the dollar in place during minting, and it flipped over. The front of the coin shows parts of the front and the reverse of the peace dollar design.
  • 1922 Peace Dollar: Mints created at least two different types of problems in 1922. A blob of metal below the eagle and above the word dollar appear on some. In the second, the blob of metal is seen on the obverse making it look like Lady Liberty is wearing an earring.
  • 1923 Peace Dollar: Some of these dollars were double struck, resulting in some coins obverses appearing double. While some show the D in God and the We as double, others show parts of two Lady Liberties and more sun rays.
Where were peace dollars minted?

In all, there were 111,230,179 minted. The first peace dollars, 1,006,473 of them, were minted in Philadelphia in late 1921 for release in 1922. The years 1922, 1923, 1926, 1927, and 1934 were the only ones where employees minted coins in Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Denver. In the remaining years, such as the production of the 1925 silver dollar, they were minted only in Philadelphia and San Francisco.
