I wasn't sure how our 1 1/2 year old would play with it, but he eventually figured out how to put the gears on. It is a little tall for him to do sitting down, but if he got up on his knees or standing while holding onto something (not quite walking yet), he could do it. I wouldn't get it for any kids less than 1 1/2. I don't think they would be ready to do it yet. The middle post doesn't screw into the base, which is good and bad. It is annoying because it can easily lift out and then the gears go spinning off the end. However, my son thought this was great. His older brother would load up all the gears and then he would lift up the post and watch all the gears spin off and crash on the floor. Overall, it's a great toy. Simple, colorful, and not too many parts to keep track of (and they are big enough that they aren't easily squirreled places).Read full review
