This device was made to function a certain way and so far it has been great. sometimes though I notice yellowish-green light around it at times when it's not in use. I am not sure what is the cause for that. It does not occupy much space either. i used it to turn my light on and off even when am not home. for that feature, you will need to get the smart plugs.
I already had a First generation so I was familiar with it. But dI needed one for down stairs. I love the way it responds to my voice. I wish my husband would listen and respond as this does.
NIB item was very easy to set up using Alexa App on iPhone. Alexa App automatically "noticed" the Echo Dot after it powered on, all I had to do was follow the prompts in the app. Whole process from opening box to Echo Dot being completely set up, was about 2 minutes.
This is wonderful and it is used each day. Alexa answers questions fast, sets timers for me and lets me know how much time is left on the timer, gives me the weather, the news, and adds thing to my multiple shopping lists and I've created packing lists and she adds things to it and it all shows up on my phone. She adds items to my calendar and provides me reminders that all go on my phone and she recites the reminder. Highly recommend you buy this to organize your life. I've had no problem with security and my conversations of buying something are not showing up on Amazon etc. as people have claimed.
Bought for elderly blind family member. He needed some training with how to talk to Alexa but it has been very helpful for easy access to music, news, sports and podcasts.
