This is a fun game for a group to play. You need at least 3 players; the more, the better (up to six). It does have a slightly steep learning curve, so the group will need patience to get things started. We played a couple rounds with all our cards "face up" to get everything straight, but now we can just play. Some rounds take longer than others, you just never know if the game is going to last 20 minutes or an hour and 20 minutes (or longer). Longer games are pretty much guaranteed if you add any of the expansions, either other Munchkin stand-alone games or straight expansion packs. Since there are so many different "flavors" of expansions, it keeps the game interesting and fun, especially if you mix and match. Safe for kids (if they have the patience to learn and ability to understand basic strategy). Read full review

(This is not a book it is a Card Game) Munchkin by Steve Jackson Games is a really fun game for 3 - 6 players. It is possible to play with more, it is also possible to play with 2 but you sure have a lot more fun somewhere between the 3 - 6 player mark. When I say family fun I do warn a little bit... "family" I would not suggest young kids as their are some 'interesting' scenerios... for instance some cards can only be used by male or female players.... or a (ingame) sex-changed-Male or Sex-Changed-Female... I wouldn't want to explain that to my little one. Also their are a few (2 or 3 I think) cards with slight profanity on it (Examples so you can see in contex: Bad-Ass Bandana, Sneaky Bastard Sword). Munchkin is very loosly based off of dungeons and dragons in the sense that you a character (medival type setting) going into a dungeon to get treasure and to gain levels. The game allows you to change your class (what type of character you are: Wizard, Warrior, Cleric etc...) each of them have their own advantages and disadvantages. You travel into the dungeon using cards to see what monsters you might encounter ranging from The Plutonium Dragon, and the Hippogriff. Down to the Shrieking Geek, and the every scarey Insurance Salesman. When you beat the monsters you get the booty (treasure) ranging from Spiky Knees, Boots of Butt-Kicking, to the Cheese Grater of Peace. I could go on and on sighting such fun/funny cards that it makes me want to call my friends over to play. But half the fun is seeing the cards for yourself so I'll refrain. The cards are half of the fun... The other half is the interpersonal action... I'm gonna read a small section out of the rulebook just because it really gives a good idea of how the game is played: "Rules and Contradictions or Disputes: When the cards disagree with the rules, follow the cards. Any other disputes should be settled by loud arguments among the players, with the owner of the game having the last word." The game also relies on players working together (as well as against eachother) to combat the monsters, it requires bribery and teamwork. If you like sit around and talk with your friends or family and play a good spirited game of fun and trickery, you will love Munchkin. I play it camping with my family every year and also inbetween whenever I can. I love this game. If it sounds like your type of game.... It probably is, you will love it! I know I do!!Read full review
I first played this game in the form of Munchkin Deluxe, and years later I wanted to own a basic version of it so I can play it on a special occasion. It was something I wanted when I saw it at a board game store in Glasgow but they did not have it back then, so I had to find it and buy it all on eBay. Best game I own so far.
