Perfect walkabout lens
Great quality, quite lightweight, compact and perfect for carrying on my 5D for town and country walks. The front lens is close to the lens rim, so needs protection from you sunlight and scratching. I don't see the point in spending serious money on a quality lens only to put another piece of glass in front of it which can only diminish the captured image quality, so I use rubber collapsible lens hoods, which act as great lens protectors without talking up space in the camera bag.

Love this lens!
Highly recommend this lens for tight places, or for small detailed things like diamond rings, classy foods dishes, and still life photographs. The bokah is fabulous. I like it better than my 50mm. I had a friend in a very small, poorly lit, hospital room, with a newborn yesterday, and this little lens was perfect for that situation as well.

Better than kit lens
I bought it to act as a 50mm lens for my Rebel T4i. Great decision! Sharp (when accurate. But I shoot manual any way.) Lightweight. It's plastic so have to be careful with how you package it. Nice shallow depth of field. Love that it opens to f2. Sharper and clearer than my kit lens. The autofocus is wonky at times but I just may need a little more practice with it.

Great lens for both crop sensors and full-frame cameras.
I had this lens sometime back and unwisely sold it when I was downsizing. It's a perfect walk-around lens as I prefer primes over zooms when I can get away with it. I generally take my 28mm f/1.8, the 35mm f/2.0 and a 50mm f/1.4 - all very fast and very sharp (and very light). The 35mm is very sharp, focuses pretty fast - usually that's not a requirement of mine - and I love the pictures I get from it.
