This CD player/DAC combination is really incredible! I have a revealing system using a Jeff Rowland amp and preamp combined with a late 1990s Theta DS Pro, Generation V DAC. The separately accessible Marantz DAC section easily outperforms my old Theta DAC and that's saying something. The Theta is a ladder DAC and many experts feel that ladder DAC performance has rarely been surpassed by more modern bit stream DACS. But musical nuance on well recorded CDs that is barely perceptible on the Theta is easily more audible on the Marantz. And there is a "liquidity" and a cohesiveness to the sound quality of the Marantz that isn't as apparent on the Theta. These are subtle differences that I have never noticed with the Theta in comparison to modern DACs that I have auditioned in dealer showrooms and at audio shows. But it is definitely there and once experienced is rather addictive, especially to audiophiles searching for the ultimate in digital sound quality from their CD collections. Usually when comparing Dacs, I require multiple back and forth sessions to experience these subtle differences, as auditory memory is fleeting.
