Light gradually turns on when you turn it clockwise which will be useful to keep the light low so that it doesn't overpower your eyes in the dark. If you turn it counterclockwise, it goes directly to the highest power. I have some concern that I will unintentionally turn the lamp slightly on and drain the batteries.

It does what it is supposed to do, but when you switch it on you have to be careful because the switch just turns and keeps turning so it's hard to tell if it's off or not. It's easy to run through batteries if you don't notice that it's on low instead of off. Then you find yourself without lighted pins when you need them the most. The on/off/dimmer switch should have positive stops and then it would be a 5 star. Just a design flaw that I've found annoying.
