XPS 13 Dressed in a Suit
The title says it all, it's really an XPS 13, exception to the fact that it is passively cooled. Some notes about this laptop: - You can get the service guide from Dell easily - the display assembly is easy to replace - the SSD is still removable - the RAM and CPU are soldered BIG ONE: *ATTENTION*: the version of this laptop with both the NFC and Smart Card reader has only a 34WH battery, whereas the one without the security devices has a 43WH battery. The 3200x1800 screen is fairly middling, the 1080p version is better if you can score it with the highest RAM + CPU spec. Pros: - EXTREMELY lightweight - Has the footprint of an 11.6" device but is 13.3" - ONLY excellent displays available - Fanless, it will make no noise other than the coil whine that Dell has issues with. Mine is quiet-ish. - Durable, these laptops are built to last, and the batteries are dirt cheap on eBay ($29.99 last I checked) - Charges over USB C and only uses 45W to charge - HAS THUNDERBOLT 3, and it's two ports with an x4 connection, so you are actually able to do some gaming with this machine, although you need to undervolt the CPU. - CHEAP DOCKING SOLUTIONS! This laptop also works with eGPUs, confirmed by me with my GTX 1060 and Akitio Node. You can get TB15s for dirt cheap, or use other docks provided you install the drivers. Cons: -The low voltage passive CPU leaves some HUGE unused potential... were Dell to have included just a tiny fan or a bigger heatsink, the performance would double for long workloads. - The High DPI 3200x1800 display is amazing and all, but it is a huge drain on the battery, along with the paltry battery size. This is made up by the fact that it can charge from a power bank provided you have one with USB PD. - Reaching 80C with the CPU causes massive throttling to about 1.2-1.6GHz. - Coil whine is noticeable in a silent room, your model may not have this. - It seems that the hinge may be a tad loose or moveable on some of these laptops. - Running Windows 7 is a pain in the bum if you decide to go back to it. The rationale behind undervolting and/or reducing the power envelope to keep the stupid overzealous throttling from capping the CPU at 1.2GHz. I don't know why Dell sets the throttle limit at 80 Celsius... Apple sets theirs for the Macbook 12 at around 97 Celsius with even worse of a cooling pad and the same CPU. --- How to do this: Search for Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, or XTU. Then, download and install it from the official Intel web site. Then, change the Core Voltage Offset to whatever you desire, usually within negative 0.080 for this CPU, which is what I use. YMMV because of the Silicon Lottery. Then, change the power envelope to about 9 to 12 watts, which will keep the CPU from causing throttling by hitting 80 Celsius. There is some room in the case, so you may be able to add thermal pads or copper shims, but whether or not this is effective has yet to be determined. Don't be fooled however, this laptop can keep up with the Macbook 12 and others. If yours is being slow, and it's not the CPU throttling (i.e. bad paste), likely it's because the seller you got it from did NOT bother with installing drivers. This laptop, thanks to its modern connectivity options, is more than capable of most things you throw at it. Don't expect to be able to encode movies or do some serious CPU-intensive work for long periods of time. Get a laptop with active cooling for that, like this laptop's successor, the 7380, or others like the ThinkPad T460p, T470, ZBook Studio G3, etc.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned
