This product was introduced in 1959. Products of this type were state of the art when I was a newly minted engineer. It was made by the REAL Hewlett Packard. decades before things went horribly wrong. The one I bought on eBay works perfectly. Barring bad engineering practice or a direct lightning strike, it will outlast me. I wonder what its story might be. Where has it been and what has it attenuated? Have we possibly met before, in a laboratory or a radio station far away? Nothing has changed. Six decibels is still approximately half the voltage in 600-ohm systems at audio frequencies. And three decibels is still half the power in 50-ohm RF and microwave measurements, whereas zero dBm is still one milliwatt. That's not all I remember but it's all you need to know. Why did eBay want me to review this purchase? You can't buy one. Ypu certain;y can't purchase this one - it's MINE. You can probably buy a 600-ohm precision attenuator, but you probably can't buy one in a wooden case. Yes, the case is made of wood - not oak, but still strangely attractive. You scoff? You want shielding that the wooden case doesn't offer? Well, the switch assemblies themselves are shielded. So take that! I hope my widow doesn't throw it away. Maybe I'll put it in my will. Is there a Hewlett Packard museum?Read full review
