It seems widely acclaimed that mechanical switches are the best for serious typing and for gaming. I'm not a gamer, but I earn a living at a keyboard and I'm thinking I'm getting tired of rubber switches. Finding samples of mechanical switches at local stores is difficult. My local Best Buy had about four gaming keyboards. The only one with Cherry MX switches had Red ones, and I know I don't want that. From reading reviews, I thought I might want Brown. But then maybe Blue was what I really craved. This device allowed me to answer that. It isn't an objectively better or worse situation. It is very personal. The final keyboard would most likely have to be ordered, and they are expensive enough to not want to guess wrong. Also without trying it, how does one know what imact the rubber washers make on sound (or feel)? Again this sample helps. For me it became clear that I wanted keys with the "breakover" (snap action) feel that the extra moving part provides. That is only on the blue, green and white ones. The "bump" that the brown, clear and grey ones use to simulate it just doesn't do it for me. I'm in the camp that says it feels scratchy, like sandpaper. And I knew the red and black that smoothly bottom out weren't going to meet my needs. Of the three snap action ones, the blue is the lightest touch (least fatique), so that is probably the direction I will go. But I needed this test fixture to know that.Read full review

One could describe the different key switches all day long- but with one of these it becomes clear as can be. When you start pushing them you will know exactly what the different key styles are like in an instant. For those who don't already know it mechanical keyboards may be expensive- but they blow away standard keyboards. After using one of them going back to a standard mushy keyboard is going to feel like going back to dialup. With a key sampler you can pick out what kind of keys you want and get one just for your style. It is worth it!
